Growing up in the Dominican Republic, I will admit I was privileged. I had it really easy growing up, and I am eternally grateful for that. However, the rest of my family wasn’t as fortunate. On the weekends and during extended vacations, we would visit my family. Most of them lived in slums and rural areas, where I realized a lot of them didn’t have most of the things I did. Although they made the most of their lives, I realized they were still lacking educational and recreational resources. My parents would try to pitch in as much as possible. However, the corrupt governments in the country, which had the ability to help, wouldn’t. They would instead put the money in their own pockets.

For as long as history has lasted, people have always questioned what humans were truly brought on this world to do. What do we contribute to the world? What do we even bring other than destruction? Whether or not you may be religious, a common saying is that everything exists for a reason. That mosquito you might not like, or that bee that might have stung you when you were 5, was put on this earth for a reason. Just like them, YOU were put here for a purpose. Although some people may not have found their purpose yet, I have found mine. My fundamental duty to this world is to make improvements for all the future generations to come, so when they arrive, they have the best possible version of the world.

In 5–10 years, I see myself with a role in government, writing bills and laws for the people and inspired by the people. Then, after moving to the Bronx, I also saw an immense amount of misuse of resources. To the point where the Bronx is a place with some of the lowest literacy rates and the highest rates of teenage violence in the entire country. These experiences have shaped my understanding of what is needed in this world and are what motivate me to pursue a doctorate in political science so I can later become a member of the U.S. government. This position is important to me because we have a substantial shortage of people of color in positions of power. In today’s society, we see how when there is a lack of diversity in places of power, we can’t rely on people who don’t understand our struggles to support us. I want to make sure that all the people of the world—regardless of color, sexuality, race, upbringing, finances, or health—receive everything that by laws of nature and laws of God they deserve. Some people might not know exactly how they’re going to help fix the world. As for me, I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do.

Look at today’s day and age, where Medicare is getting cut for millions of low-income Americans across the country. Why? Because not a single person who grew up in the projects, been on welfare, or had to struggle is in a position of power. To conclude, it is our purpose to improve the world and, as I mentioned, to make real changes to society. That is why it is my mission to bring up the issues that I not only saw around me but at one point grew up with.
