Brooklyn 99 Review

Brooklyn 99 is a smartly written, consistently entertaining, emotionally engaging sit-com you can binge watch guilt-free. Episodes are only 20 minutes long. The series is set in a busy New York police station and every episode is packed with one liners. Not only is this cleverly written series laugh out loud funny, the cast deliver storylines we actually care about.

For me, the show’s strength is its diversity and characters we quickly grow fond of. The cast is made up of immature, Jake Peralta, a rookie cop with a Die Hard obsession, Charles, his ‘nerdy’ side kick and the impossibly dry Captain Holt. The show avoids lazy stereotypes around race and gender and there is no tacky canned laughter. Don’t get me started on canned laughter!

The series has witty dialogue, some stand out performances and watch out for Gina the precinct’s fabulous administrator and gossip. Brooklyn 99 is clever, funny and inclusive. Perfect entertainment for busy IEB students. With each episode less than half an hour long you can watch an episode this long weekend and still have time for all your sporting activities. What’s not to love!

Week 1 Task

Imagine you are planning a lesson for one of your classes.

Now we are going to plan an activity in English for your students. Don’t stress- we’re practising! Write at least 100 words.

think of a simple activity - a game or an exercise that your students normally do
write a plan for the activity with instructions in English
think about the vocabulary you will need to use in class
think about how you will explain the activity to your classmates in English class next week

Week 2 Task

In class we worked on the listening task. Now it's your turn to write a restaurant review. It can be positive or negative, invented or your real experience. Write at least 150 words. Comment on: service/ atmosphere/value for money/quality of the food and drinks/location.
Vocab from the class: they got the order wrong, we waited ages, packed, set menu, terrace, outdoor heaters, Does the fish place suit everyone? What about that Italian place?
Vegetarian/vegan, spicy, allergic to XXX, good value, decent.
