Title: The Giver
Author: Lois Lowry
Summary: Jonas lives in a seemingly utopian society where conformity equates to happiness. At the Ceremony of Twelve, where all twelve-year-old children receive their lifelong job assignments, Jonas is surprised to learn that he has been chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory. One day, Jonas asks what "release" means in the context of their society. The Giver shows Jonas a baby being euthanized by Jonas' own father, a Nurturer who cares for infants before they're either assigned to a family or euthanized. Fueled by his knowledge of the euthanizations, Jonas escapes into Elsewhere with Gabriel, aware that once he leaves all his memories will be returned to the people. Jonas and Gabriel brave the cold as they cross the border. The novel ends when Jonas sees a warmly lit house with a Christmas tree.

Characters:
Jonas
Jonas's father
Jonas's mother
Lily
Gabriel
Asher
Larissa
Fiona
The chief elder
Plot: The giver is written in the point of view of Jonas, an 11 year old boy living in a futuristic society that has eliminated all pain, fear, war and hatred.
Conclusion: The ending to The Giver is sort of a "take it how you like it" deal. Either Jonas and Gabriel make it to Elsewhere, everyone is happy, and the world is right as rain, or… they die of exposure/starvation in the freezing snow.

Title: A Wrinkle In Time
Author:Madeleine L'Engle

Summary: After a visit with the Happy Medium, an oracle who tells them what path they must follow, the children are taken to the planet of Camazotz, a planet overtaken by the Dark Thing. The children meet the Man with the Red Eyes who tries to "hypnotize" them into following IT. They are then taken to see Meg's father who has been imprisoned by IT. After Meg heroically rescues him from his glass chamber, Charles Wallace, still under IT's influence, takes them to see this IT. On another planet, Ixchel, Meg is healed by a giant, tentacled beast called Aunt Beast. Aunt Beast shows her the meaning of true love and soon gives her the strength to offer her self to save Charles Wallace. Alone and back on Camazotz, Meg confronts IT face to face, and, using the only power that IT does not have - love - is finally able to defeat it. IT only wields the power of hate, and almost overtakes her, but Meg's love for her brother is stronger than the hate of IT. As she and the rescued Charles Wallace embrace, they are tessered back to earth where they are reunited with their family.
Characters:
Meg Murry
Charles Wallace Murry
Calvin O'Keefe
IT
The black thing
Mrs. Whatsit
Mrs. Which
Mrs. Who
Mr. Murry
Plot: A Wrinkle in Time is the story of Meg Murry, a high-school-aged girl who is transported on an adventure through time and space with her younger brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin O'Keefe to rescue her father, a gifted scientist, from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet.
Conclusion: Mr. Murry and Calvin Wallace both escaped from IT, but the giant brain dude is still pulsating out there on Camazotz, and most of the people of that planet probably didn't even know that the Murrys were poking at their collective brain. The ending of the novel is definitely happy. But from another perspective, the more universal perspective that the novel itself cultivates, that happiness is very limited.

Title: Holes
Author: Louis Sachar
Summary: Stanley's arrest is just the latest in a string of bad fortunes for the Yelnats family. Turns out that several generations back, the Yelnatses were cursed by a one-legged gypsy. And over the course of the book, we get a glimpse into some different time periods: the story of Stanley Yelnats and his unlikely friendship with another camper named Zero; the story of Stanley's great-great-grandpa who was cursed by Madame Zeroni; and the story of Miss Katherine's transformation to Kissin' Kate Barlow after a failed love affair with an onion man.
In the end, all of these stories come together, and Stanley Yelnats comes out on top and the underdog prevails.

Characters:
Stanley Yelnats
Zero
The Warden
X-Ray
Mr. Pendanski
Miss Katherine
Sam the Onion Man
Elya Yelants
Mr. Sir
Derrick Dunne
Plot: We're headed to camp! Actually, scratch that exclamation point: Holes begins with a description of Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility in Texas. Basically, it's a place for kids who have committed crimes. Stanley Yelnats, overweight, lonely, and poor, has been arrested for a crime he didn't commit, and he's on a bus headed for Camp Green Lake.
Conclusion: The Warden had been arrested. Camp Greenlake was shut down. The boys from camp had to be split up and sent to different camps around the country. The D-Tent boys got to stay together, Twitch, Zigzag, Armpit, X-Ray, Magnet, and Squid. They were sent to a camp in California, Camp Milridge.

Title: Wonder
Author: R.J. Palacio
Summary: August Pullman is a fifth-grade boy with a severe facial difference. His loving parents and sister have shielded him from many outside influences before WONDER begins; he's been homeschooled up until that point, for example. But at the start of the book, his mother has decided that it's time for Auggie to brave a real school experience. Auggie is upset and afraid to face the kids' reactions to his appearance, but there's also part of him that wants to do "normal" things. The director of his new school, Mr. Tushman, introduces Auggie to a small group of students before school starts, thinking this will help ease the transition. Whereas some of the students Auggie meets are accepting and kind, others are a bit put off by him, and still others are downright cruel. The novel follows Auggie's first year of middle school from beginning to end. It's a year in which Auggie experiences the best and the worst of human nature and a year of tremendous emotional growth for him.
Characters:
Auggie Pullman
Via Pullamn
Isabel Pullamn
Nate Pullamn
Jack Will
Summer Dawson
Mr. Tushman
Plot: Wonder is about 10-year-old August Pullman, who has a genetic facial difference. After being homeschooled, he enters school for the first time in fifth grade and has to cope with a range of reactions to his unusual appearance, as well as a lot of typical middle school drama. Some kids use hateful language, and some people suggest that Auggie is mentally deficient. These situations are upsetting, as are other hardships that Auggie's family endures, including loss of a beloved family pet.
Conclusion: Almost everyone has at last warmed up to Auggie and wants to be his friend. Things start looking up: the Pullmans get a new puppy, and Auggie learns from Mr. Tushman that Julian will not come back to Beecher Prep the following year. Graduation arrives; Auggie wins a special award for courage and kindness. He realizes how far he has come since the beginning of school, and he now has a solid group of friends and feels comfortable with who he is.

Title: The Hobbit
Author: J. R. R. Talkien
Summary: The Hobbit is a novel by J.R.R Tolkien, author of Lord Of The Rings. The novel is about the journey of a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins, along with Gandalf The Gray, and twelve dwarves. The purpose for their journey was to reach the Misty Mountain and take back Thorin's treasures from the dragon, Smaug. Bilbo was to act as their "burglar", and also to increase their number, since they were thirteen travelers without him (which was, according to Gandalf, bad luck). It also tells the story of how the One Ring of Power passed into the possesion of Bilbo.
Characters:
Bilbo Baggins
Gandalf
Thorin Oakenshield
Gollum
Smaug
Bard
Beorn
Elrond
Dark Lord Sauron
Thror
Dwarves
Elves
Humans
Trolls
Goblins
Wargs
Plot: Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) lives a simple life with his fellow hobbits in the shire, until the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) arrives and convinces him to join a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor. The journey takes Bilbo on a path through treacherous lands swarming with orcs, goblins and other dangers, not the least of which is an encounter with Gollum (Andy Serkis) and a simple gold ring that is tied to the fate of Middle Earth in ways Bilbo cannot even fathom.
Conclusion: Gandalf and Bilbo pass through Rivendell and eventually make their way to Hobbiton. It is summer and Bilbo is disappointed to learn that he is legally dead. Greedy cousins, the Sackville-Bagginses are auctioning his property because he is "Presumed Dead." They are more than a little displeased at his arrival and it takes several years for Bilbo to sort out the legalisms. In fact, Bilbo had to buy back a good deal of his own furniture his reputation, for better or worse, was harder to reclaim. But as for Bilbo, son of Belladonna Took, "for ever after he remained an elf-friend, and had the honour of dwarves, wizards, and all such folk as ever passed that way.
