Self practice self-reflection (SP/SR) has many values for the clinician. Not least of which is an understanding of what it is like to be asked to complete the treatments that we conduct with our clients.

This week is all about your response to completing your FEAR plan, as we would ask children to complete in the Coping Cat intervention. I would like you to reflect upon your experiences by answering the questions in Box 2. Post your responses anywhere on the padlet.

1. I felt fine about being asked to do this it looked easier than the previous weeks task and I didn't anticipate it taking long to complete.
2. I found it very easy to complete as we had started it in the seminar already.
3. There were no barriers to completing this really other than struggling slightly to articulate what I was thinking for the 'E' aspect of the fear plan.
4. Didn't really have any effect on me.
5. I believe that this would be a helpful exercise for children to complete, however very young children may struggle to articulate how their body felt when they felt fear as I believe may be a difficult feeling to accurately communicate, especially for a young child.

I didn't mind being asked to do this task because it seemed straightforward
2. This was pretty easy as we had started it earlier in the seminar but i found i had to think a bit to find words to fit to feelings and experiences
3. I don't think their were any barriers but thinking about my body reactions (F) tricky
4. I dont think i was affected by completing this
5. I think this would be helpful to children as they can actively explore what have made them anxious and find a coping method for it. A younger child may find it more difficult to articulate how they felt.

I found this very easy is to complete as I thought the steps were straight forward and we had watched videos of children and therapists discussing it.
3. I didn't feel there were any barriers to completing this.
4. I didn't feel there was any effect on me, except acknowledging unrealistic expectations I had about situations I have felt nervous for or in.
5. I think this is a very helpful tool for children experiencing anxiety because it is easy to complete and easy to remember. The concepts are not difficult to understand, especially with the support of a therapist.

I completed it in the seminar as I had a recent experience in mind.
3. I didn't experience any barriers but this may be because I'm an adult and was in control and had experience of my fear.
4. No significant effect although I did listen out for outside noises when I woke again the following night.
5. My response made me think that sometimes reliving fearful events may have a consolidating effect and assurances should be made to children who are brave and express a fear.

1. I didn't mind it as it felt natural to me to recognise/ keep track of when I was feeling nervous or anxious.
2. It was easy to complete this because again, I do tend to check on myself whenever I feel anxious or nervous.
3. The only small barrier I had was filling up the worksheet when I was feeling anxious- almost felt like it was adding onto my to-do list which stressed me out even more.
4. After filling it out, it does provide me with insight as to why I might be feeling anxious/ nervous, which in turn did help to reduce my anxiety when I realised that I might be overreacting.
5. I think children can definitely benefit from this treatment, although I imagine that it might be a bit challenging for them because it requires a lot of introspection and awareness about emotions, stressors and physical sensations. Furthermore, it could be a tad bit distressing for children if they were reflecting back on a situation where they were really anxious or nervous (e.g. parents quarreling, etc.)

1) I was happy to complete this task as it seemed straightforward and not too time consuming.
2) This was relatively easy to complete as I had a situation in mind which had recently been an anxiety provoking experience for me
3) I did not experience any real barriers to completing this exercise, however, it was slightly challenging for me to really believe in my positive attitude/ commit to helpful actions
4) After completing this, I felt better able to recognise my anxiety, and ways to combat this. I was more motivated to engage with actions I had previously avoided due to anxiety.
5) I think this is a really clear way for children to explore their anxiety. This is simple and engaging, with the use of small, manageable tasks, so that they don't get bored. I do think that children may feel uneasy when exploring anxiety provoking situations, but this therapeutic approach provides a good framework for them to feel supported within. The rewards are an excellent way to motivate children too.

1. This weeks task seemed a lot less effort than those of previous weeks so I was more than happy to complete it. I am keen to complete these as I think self-practice is really important.
2. As I mention, this task seemed easier to complete than previous weeks and that proved to be true.
3. Barriers to completed this was mainly time - we have the essay due in this module soon as so that is occupying most of my free time.
4. Perhaps because I am very concentrated on other things at the moment - but I felt the task this week had particularly little impact on me. However, I can see how it would be helpful to someone committed to completing the tasks as they were feeling anxiety.
5. I think self-practice is really helpful for being empathetic to children who may be completing these tasks. However, I am aware their experience would be very different to mine.

1) I felt fine about being asked to do this as it didn't seem particularly hard to complete.
2) This was fairly easy to complete. I think as it was created for children it's in a very simple format, with each of the steps being small and easy to complete. Also as we had been through it in a fair amount of detail in the lecture and had watched children complete the steps it was fairly straightforward.
3) I didn't feel there were many barriers to completing this apart from remembering to do it because I've been so preoccupied with the essay.
4) I think this task out of all the ones we've completed probably had the least effect on me.
5) Although I didn't feel this task had a great effect on me I can see how this would be helpful for younger children as it so clearly outlines the different parts their anxiety and how they can deal with these. Children are also quite motivated by rewards so this seems to be a good way to engage them and to encourage them to actually complete the STIC task.

It was fairly easy, probably due to completing all the other previous week's tasks and already having situations in mind.
3. No barriers apart from remembering to implement it.
4. Did not have that much of an effect on me this time, probably due to the simplified nature of the exercise.
5. I feel that once children have brainstormed ideas about feelings, bodily sensations etc they will find it more comfortable to complete the task. The element of "fun" greatly helps too.

It was easy enough to complete.
3. The main barrier for me to completing this is time and actually remembering in the first place.
4. Due to work, essay, family, life etc demands, my attention has not been fully on the task this week and so its effect has not really been noticeable. I feel it has been, unfortunately, more about 'ticking a box' for me. Ironically, saying that here in particular makes me anxious as I'm aware that it may make me sound like a 'bad' student! That little process itself however makes me love self reflection though :)
5. My response here could mean that sometimes children may feel unenthusiastic towards the task, any task, for reasons which go beyond motivation. However, exploring that process in itself can still be valuable and helpful.

It was easy to complete, and wasn't time consuming. I like this simple format, and can understand why it works so well in children.
3. I didnt have any barriers doing this, as this is something I try to do regularly in my head to deal with any anxious thoughts.
4. I felt this was useful to do, and could compartmentalise any anxiety i had better.
5. I like this simple approach which seems appropriate for children. However, for a young child it may be hard for them to self-reflect, so perhaps it would be useful to have the therapist present or a parent so they can talk about how they feel, and put it into words to fully understand any anxiety they are experiencing.

1. I felt fine about being asked to do this as I understand that it is an important part of learning about the techniques used- to experience them and then reflect upon our own experiences of them.
2. I found this easy to complete, possibly because as adults we have a greater insight into our own thoughts and the physical sensations that can accompany them.
3. I didn't experience any barriers.
4. I'd say that it had little effect, other than perhaps highlighting the irrational nature of the anxious thoughts that I was focusing on.
5. I found the plan simple and straightforward to complete, which I think is a positive when working with children- it shouldn't be too overwhelming as there are not too many sections to complete and the wording is very clear.

1) It seemed straightforward, so wasn't much of an ask and seemed interesting
2) It was easy, although I'm forgetful
3) Only my memory and fitting in other stuff - essay, dissertation
4) Seemed useful for learning, but no other effects
5) Think it seems like it would be useful for children, I don't think my experiences offer much insight into this matter.

1. I was happy to do the task as it was more simple and straightforward compared to previous task, particularly the BE.

2. Overall, the task was the easiest out of all the tasks we have been given to complete.

3. Motivation was the only significant barrier. Other than that, the task was very straightforward.

4. Like previous tasks, it helped to make me more aware of my thoughts, but to a lesser degree in my opinion.

5. I feel like it can be quite a simple yet effective way of helping children, especially if they find doing something like a BE too demanding.

1. I think it was easy to complete this task. Simple answers to simple questions.
2. Easy for me, I am quite aware of my physiological reactions and the questions were very guided so I just listed as appropriate.
3. No barriers honestly. Nothing much to add here other than giving it some actual thought.
4. I guess it did help me think of a specific scenario and how I reacted to it. But across the entire course, this would be one of the most simplistic tasks to complete and does not allow me to effectively compress the complexity of problems into a simple attitude and action that could help. It did help to think on a surface level though.
5. It means that this task is very simple and even without guidance of a psychologist, could be used as effective homework and completed easily even with an untrained personnel such as their parents.

1. Was very happy to do the task, I feel its important revision for our exams that we have first hand experience of the tools used to help children with CBT
2. Although a simple enough task to do, acknowledging what's making me feel frightened around deadline season seemed to make me feel more stressed than when not doing the task
3. As I'm an adult it was hard of me to think what i am 'frightened of' as opposed to stressed/unhappy with, so being aware of what all the concepts were aiming to isolate was a barrier
4. It made me more aware of what im frightened of, and therefore even if i have not felt the negative associations thought as of yet, I have already begun to think about how i would tackle those thoughts
5. It showed me that when doing this activity with a child, it may help to be fully clear what is asked from them, perhaps giving them examples of my 'FEARS' so they can use the activity effectively
