Spanish Colony
The Spanish arrived in 1519.
The main crops were corn, sugar, squash and beans because there are many different agricultural environments where many a variety of crops can be grown.
The Spanish saw the Pre-Columbian societies as an important Spanish colony because they would be an important labor force. The Spanish used the native people for encomienda labor force.
The indigenous people that the Spanish encountered when they arrived in Mexico (which was know as New Spain) were the Aztec people. The Spanish were outnumbered by the Aztecs, and so they used the diversity of the Aztecs to exploit them. They made alliances with the smaller groups of the Aztec empire to upset the larger ruling body.
