At first thought, behaviorist theory feels like the natural explanation for how language is acquired and has been my personal thought process while teaching my own children their first language. I am left to wonder where original phrases come from when they have not been modeled for someone just acquiring language.

Using a trial and error method to see if the responses from others who are more advanced in the language trying to be acquired can work, however, it seems to me that this process could come at the cost of lowered self-esteem among other issues. If this theory were to be the true and only proven theory regarding language acquisition, I wonder what role the significant caregivers  have in a child's life.

The first language learner speaks to the best of their ability and the teacher repeats the words and elaborates on the words/ideas. When the learner has demonstrated a level of understanding, the teacher can build upon the vocabulary that has been used.

I believe this process could work for some students, however, it can be unnatural for others and ineffective. There is much disruption in this process and I can see how that could discourage a second language learner.

I can see how this idea would make sense if I were to attempt the acquisition of a new language today. I am wondering how effective this method is when attempting to acquire a second language that uses rules similar to their first language.

The focus does not seem to be on measurable achievement in literacy development but rather simply being able to communicate conversationally. I believe the conditions created through Krashen's five hypotheses would have appealed to me as a second language learner, however, I do believe I would not be as strong in all aspects that are required in literacy.

I have experienced this type of interaction with my own mother.
