I am understanding behaviorist theory, when applied to acquiring language, as imitating the familiar behaviorist theory we associate with learning in general. At first thought, behaviorist theory feels like the natural explanation for how language is acquired and has been my personal thought process while teaching my own children their first language. I am left to wonder where original phrases come from when they have not been modeled for someone just acquiring language.

Quotes:
"You may be familiar with behaviorism as a major learning theory emphasizing stimulus, response, and reinforcement as the basic elements of learning" (Peregoy & Boyle, 2017, p. 60).

References
Peregoy, S., & Boyle, O.

I am understanding innatist theory to be the potential to acquire new language by utilizing an inborn capability to learn rules of a language. Using a trial and error method to see if the responses from others who are more advanced in the language trying to be acquired can work, however, it seems to me that this process could come at the cost of lowered self-esteem among other issues. If this theory were to be the true and only proven theory regarding language acquisition, I wonder what role the significant caregivers have in a child's life.

Quotes:
"Infants must come into the world prewired for linguistic analysis" (Peregoy & Boyle, 2017, p. 60).

References
Peregoy, S., & Boyle, O.

I understand interactionist theory in first language acquisition to require input from both the teacher, often a significant caretaker such as a parent and the language learner. The first language learner speaks to the best of their ability and the teacher repeats the words and elaborates on the words/ideas. When the learner has demonstrated a level of understanding, the teacher can build upon the vocabulary that has been used.

Quotes:
"Scaffolding provides conversational assistance and focused linguistic input tuned to the child's own interests and language" (Peregoy & Boyle, 2017, p. 63).

References
Peregoy, S., & Boyle, O.

I understand behaviorist perspective in second language acquisition to follow the same pattern as learning a first language. I believe this process could work for some students, however, it can be unnatural for others and ineffective. There is much disruption in this process and I can see how that could discourage a second language learner.

Quotes:
"Errors were to be corrected immediately to avoid forming bad habits that would be difficult to overcome later" (Peregoy & Boyle, 2017, p. 65).

References
Peregoy, S., & Boyle, O.

I understand innatist perspective in acquiring a second language as applying a first language's rules to the second language. I can see how this idea would make sense if I were to attempt the acquisition of a new language today. I am wondering how effective this method is when attempting to acquire a second language that uses rules similar to their first language.

Quotes:
"This process compares phonological, morphological, and syntactic rules of two languages" (Peregoy & Boyle, 2017, p. 66).

References
Peregoy, S., & Boyle, O.

My understanding of Krashen's five hypotheses of second language acquisition is taking a relaxed natural approach. The focus does not seem to be on measurable achievement in literacy development but rather simply being able to communicate conversationally. I believe the conditions created through Krashen's five hypotheses would have appealed to me as a second language learner, however, I do believe I would not be as strong in all aspects that are required in literacy.

I understand the interactonist perspective in acquiring a second language to require a give and take equally through non verbal expressions and modifying proper language to improper language when that would make words more easily understood. I have experienced this type of interaction with my own mother. This modification does not always lead to helping the second language learner correct their language or ask questions.
