A storybook that could be used to help children learn shapes is a book called 'Shapes That Roll', by Karen Nagal. It is a fun book that tells children about the properties of different shapes, mainly focused on squares circles and triangles. It also relates to shapes in our environments as it points out where some of these shapes can be found. It moves on to 3D shapes too, which is beneficial for older children.

Piet Mondrian's artwork can be useful in a maths lesson about shapes as children can count the shapes and figure out if they are rectangles or squares and what are the differences between them. They can create their own artwork perhaps using a different shape.

There are many videos on YouTube to help children learn shapes and their properties, as I have used them in placement in maths lessons. Many have catchy songs that get the children excited and engaged. You could also use an episode of Spongebob Squarepants as he is square and his friend Patrick is star-shaped. They can find lots of other shapes and write them down during the episode.

This could include windows, circles/squares on the playground, triangle roofs of the buildings. They can also do it in their own homes and bring it in to share with the class.
