Bystanders- Stand Up and Speak Up Against Cyberbullying. My topic is going to focus on the bystanders of cyberbullying and how this affects their mental health. Most times we focus only on the bully and victim but what about the bystanders? In this group we will be working with children between the ages of 9 through 11 years old.

After flyers are put up and I have a good number of responses, I will ask to meet in the library and give out a survey/questionnaire so that I can see how much they know about cyberbullying. I will do screening as a group so that I can see just how much they interact with each other and who is willing to participate. I will describe the group and the purpose of it, explain when meetings will take place and the goals and expectations of the group. Finally, I will ask the students to explain to me in their own words the purpose of the group and what they understand of the topic. Most importantly I will ask why they are interested and I will explain the importance of confidentiality within the group.

Stage 1: It is important for group members to get to know each other and respect each other. We all have one thing in common and that is to speak up against cyberbullying. I will explain the importance of confidentiality among the group because we would not like for others to talk about our conversation when trust was placed on you to open up. However, it is not guaranteed but it is a group rule.
Stage 2: I will create group activities so that we all get involved and have the opportunity to work with each group member. Perhaps, role play with different situations that each member has partaken in. At a young age, I feel this is the best format to kind of understand the situation and then discuss what could or can be done. Most importantly to value each other and make each member feel important.
Stage 3: Saying "goodbye" is always difficult. However, I will prepare the group that our time is coming to an end but I will first observe a few weeks before our last session to see how much more confident each member is about themselves. We will discuss this in a session as well. Nonetheless, I will let each member know that no matter what I am always here and that now they have the resources in the case a situation gets too out of hand for them.

I will be using the transformational leadership style. I feel that this style works best for the age group of members I will be working with and the issue. I want to motivate my group to start and make a difference in their lives and in that of others. Cyberbullying won't be a thing of the past, but with this leadership style, I feel I will motivate them to make it better for others and change things for them.

Yalom's Therapeutic Factors within my group

There are 3 of Yalom's therapeutic factors that I am hoping/planning to see in my group.
1. Universality-group members need to know that they are not alone in ever having witnessed cyberbullying take place.
2. Altruism- ultimate goal is for group members to get the courage to stand up and speak up against cyberbullying. All while, helping victims get the courage to speak up as well. NO FEAR!!
3. Interpersonal learning- they can learn from one another. Talking about experiences and working out on how to approach the situation is great for interpersonal learning.

Under Section A.9. Group work:
A.9.a. Screening- as a group counselor I am responsible for screening participants. It is my obligation to screen participants and choose those whom are compatible with the group session. It is important to keep in mind the well-being of each participant and that by selecting them they will add to the benefit and goal of the group.

A.9.b. Protecting clients- It is my responsibility to look out for the safety of my group members. This includes physical, mental and psychological. Some sessions may be more sensitive than other sessions; therefore, I have to reassure that each session topic is introduced and I let my group members know that if at any time they feel uncomfortable talking about something for them to speak up. It is appropriate to take age into consideration under this ethical code.

Code of Ethics
A.2. Informed Consent in the Counseling Relationship
A.2.a. Informed consent- with any type of counseling it is important to get consent; more so, when you are going to be working with children under the age of 18. In this case, it is important that I get consent from each parent/guardian of each group member. In addition, I plan to meet with them so that they understand the purpose of the group and if they agree that their child participate. I will be notifying them of how they are doing throughout each session and if they have any questions they can ask. I will also explain to the participants about consent within the group to discuss any event in which they have been involved in that involves cyberbullying. Before starting any session, I will reassure to have a signed consent form from each individual's parent/guardian.
