The «Times» was founded by John Walter in 1785 and was called The Daily Universal Register. January 1, 1788, after 940 publications, the name changed to The Times. Thanks to efforts of John Walter junior to extract news from continental Europe, especially from France, the newspaper earned a good reputation in the highest political and financial circles. Among the authors of publications in The Times, prominent figures in politics, science, literature and art began to appear. In its early years, the newspaper experienced little competition and was a very profitable enterprise, and therefore could pay its authors and sources of information much higher fees than other publications.
