The steam is produced by hot water reservoirs located a few miles or more beneath the earth's surface. 

The steam turns a turbine, which activates a generator, which generates electricity. 

Geothermal power plants are classified into three types: dry steam, flash steam, and binary cycle.

Geothermal energy at low temperatures can be used to heat greenhouses, homes, fisheries, and industrial processes. Low-temperature energy is most efficient when used for heating, but it can also be used to generate electricity on occasion.
