I liked the title 'Ersatz' for this piece as I became interested in the 'artificial' and the contrast between the natural and man made. Accents of fluorescent colour scattered around the piece for me made me think of toxic waste something natural that has been processed.
I Used sculpture as a tool to extend the marks made during the painting process, seeing it as drawing in space. Using 3 dimensional aspects to enhance the painting.

Some aspects I combined into the sculpture were:
Wax sculptures made from pouring hot wax onto water, the more you disturb the water surface, make ripples waves etc the wax picks up the movement and solidifies instantly. I like this idea of changing state and think it was relevant for the whole work looking at materials that have physically changed state as well as forcing the viewer to question what was the original material. For example using tree branches found around the building by painting them and dripping them in wax and wrapping them in bright string.
Finding materials from around the building, such as string and rope from the textiles department and incorporating this use of repurposing materials- either from previous work I have made or that I have found.
Using expanding foam- usually seen as an industrial material but having the physical qualities of sea foam or something natural. Flotsam and Jetsam entangled up on the sea shore is something I have always been interested in. My work in third year so far has drawn together of a lot of different ideas and concepts-

-Contrast and combination of the artificial and the natural,

-The self-portrait

-Dreamscapes

-Can the medium be the message?

-Changes of state,

-Questioning the original material of the art

-Repurposing and reusing found materials,

-Movement, energy and process trapped within mark making.

-Does sculpture become an extension of the painting or a part of it?

Lots of individual influences tangling up to become one piece. I like that the work can never be replicated exactly the same even if I wanted to exhibit it again, impermanence.

Looking at a canvas as a sort of vessel that has the ability to, combine and create new narratives and hold meaning. I believe the first task as an artist is to observe.
