The short story "The Dinner Party" relies on its setting to drive the plot. Showing this, in the passage a snake appears and the host notices, and asks for a cup of milk, this leads another American to realize there must be a snake. "In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing-bait for a snake"(Gardener 2). This supports the claim by showing that in India, which is where they are that milk in a bowl can only mean there is a snake. The American knows this, so he plays a game that everyone has to stay still for 300 seconds instead of getting up on their chairs and screaming. This is the main thing that happens in the story, therefore it really drives the plot.

The short story ¨The Dinner Party¨ relies on its setting to drive the plot. For instance, ¨In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing-bait for a snake¨(Gardner 2). If the setting was somewhere else the American would not have known that the bowl of milk meant a snake because that was something that happens in India. If the setting was somewhere else the bowl of milk would have meant nothing. The setting of India helped the American realize there was a snake and because of that other events happened, like the game that the American started.

The short story "The Dinner Party" relies on its setting to drive the plot. Such as, "In India, milk in a bowl only means one thing-bait for a snake" (Gardner 2). If the story were to take place in a place other than India, the said explorer would more than likely just be confused. So if the setting was in the United States, a bowl of milk would mean almost nothing, besides a potential cats' dinner. In other words, the story would not so dramatically move along if the setting was either not stated or not in India. This action is almost like the culture in India when it comes to trapping animals. Like how Americans might put out salt for deer to lick. Others in different country might find this act quite strange.

The short story " The Dinner Party" relies on its setting to drive the plot. For example, " In India a bowl of milk means only one thing-bait for a snake" (Gardner, 2). This means that the woman in the story, shortly after an argument about how women react to things, kept calm, called the boy to get the milk. The American noticed this, and asked everyone to play a game. He would count for 3 minutes, and no one could move a muscle, otherwise they lost the game. He was almost there when the snake slithered out from under the table to the milk, and most of the people at the party jumped out of their seats in surprise. One man sat still, and another said that that was a true example of how a man should act. The American said, " Not so fast,"... the proceeded to ask the hostess about how she knew the snake was in the room, and she responded that it slithered across her foot.

For example, the author states, "In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing -- bait for a snake"(Gardner 2). The American knew that milk in a bowl ment there was a snake because snakes like to drink milk. He also knew that he had to do something so that everyone would not freak out because then it would scare the snake. When the American made everyone play a game to keep them calm and also played so that the snake would not strike, drove the plot because it made the story more interesting. The story then became longer and more interesting because the American was being clever by playing a game to keep everyone and the snake calm.

The short story "The Dinner Party" relies on its setting to drive the plot. For example, "In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing-bait for a snake" (Gardner 2). In India, snakes are a common animal and any person who goes to India (especially if they are an explorer) knows to be aware of them. In this story when the American saw the milk he knew that even though snakes were not common where he was from, they were very common here so knowing all of this he took precaution and distracted everyone by playing a game, until the snake was out. If this story was set in America it would not make sense, knowing snakes are not very common here. With that being said the plot would be completely off if they were not in India. So in conclusion, the short story "The Dinner Party" relies on its setting to drive the plot.

In India's culture it is know for putting a bowl of milk out for a snake other countries aren't.

This is especially apparent when the American says," In India, milk in a bowl only means one thing-- bait for a snake"(Gardner 2). In this game, everyone had to hold still until he was done counting. (Gardner 2) When they American says this, it shows that he's using his context clues of the place around him which is India. As India is the setting for the story, it allows the American to use his prior knowledge of the country that milk in a bowl (If in India) signifies a snake. If the American had not been in India, his assumption may have been different as in different places, milk in a bowl could mean other things. So, to try and keep the other guests calm so they wouldn't frighten the snake while it was under the table, The American suggested a game for them to play that would keep them still so no one was alerted to the snake's presence and it could slither away without biting someone.

The short story, "The Dinner Party" relies on its setting to drive the plot. For example , " In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing- bait for a snack." ( Gardner 2 ) If the bowl of milk was never sat outside of the veranda doors elsewhere where the milk was clearly visible than everyone could have noticed the cobra because they know milk means there is possibly a snake. If this occurred than someone could get bitten because cobras strike when there nervous. Although since the milk was in front of the doors and the American noticed and made the connection that there was a cobra in the room he took action to keep everyone safe. Therefore in " The Dinner Party" the setting drives the plot.
