Farmers all over the world change the natural environment around them for agricultural purposes. Forests are cut down and are stripped of biodiversity, wetlands and swamps are drained and extensive areas of native species are replaced with domestic crop. This may be because of the need to expand and gain a much more substantial income, because the soil has become infertile, or resources have become scarce. As a result, our forests and natural landscapes are declining rapidly as the years go on.

Approximately 5 million hectares of forest land is used for agriculture. Most of the time this happens in tropical forests such as south America and Africa. In developing countries there is a link between deforestation and poverty. A lot of people who live in poverty are becoming slash and burn farmers. As soil fertility gets worse, the farmers and animals move to different parts of the forest and repeat the process. In Madagascar for example: 80% of the population is in poverty and only 10% of the natural forest remains.

Changes to Grasslands

Rice, Wheat and corn are the most grown and relied on foods in the world and the most efficient place to grow these is in the Grasslands. But, since the grasslands is such an ideal place to grow crops, an increase of deforestation and clearing of the native plant species can cause a wide range of effects on the environment. Because the crops are for human consumption, none of the nutrients from the plants are making their way back to the soil, making it less fertile. Since the soil is less capable, farmers are using products such as chemical fertilizers which have terrible effects on the environment. eg. water pollution. Pesticides are another problem in the grasslands. These pollute the air, water, soil and have the capability of killing many plants and animals. The soil can also become susceptible to erosion by wind and rain. Clearing of the native flora for farming can also have many flow on effects.

It happened in Africa, Australia, North + South America and Asia. The exposed soil can become susceptible to erosion by wind and rain. and clearing of the native flora for farming can have many flow on effects.
