I chose two artists as a starter, Lewis Khan and his project "Love time" a portrait of our NHS and the photographer Syd Sheldon and his famous photography of the Rock Against racism movement. Lewis Khans portrayal of the hospital he stayed as artist in residence at links very well to themes of support. "It is a compeling insight into the experiences of the doctors and nurses striving to keep the NHS on its feet" This is a very relevant reality in our current political climate at a time where the NHS is threatened by privatisation and underfunding and Brexit is revitalising anti immigrant hate, which may affect the over a hundred thousand foreign NHS workers of which 60 thousand are from the EU. I plan to go to the upcoming Brexit peoples vote march this month to capture some of this.  Syd Sheldon's work on Rock Against Racism focuses on the anti fascist punk rock movement of the late 70s, its this continuing battle against raciscm which I hope i recaptured In my recent photo shoot of the Stand up to racism march.

In elinas lesson we were told to pick a book from the library to read up on and explore our themes. Straight away I tried to look for photo books that included scenes of protest in any context. I ended up taking five books out mostly focused on war/street photography however only one of the books, photographing 80s Iran came close to photographing protest in action. After a quick read I returned all these books for one of Elinas the Astrid Proll Baader Meinhof photobook  featuring an insider photografical account of the far left millitant RAF in 70s 80s Germany.
I Wrote a short peice on my thoughts on the book and how i felt it linked to the themes we were given. 
I should mention I was inspired to pick up this book after we visited the Photographer gallery earlyer on this week. I even cut out some of the subjects in the photos that i think worked better without their surroundings and stuck them in. I started annotating around them.
I Finaly got the digital full frame photos from the first march from the fellow students sd I borrowed and stuck in the photos.

I finished annotating my research pages and moved on to annotating the best pictures from the Brexit peoples vote march. I also on a free page after that stuck in some different headlines from different online news articles from all sides. After that I finished annotating the photos from the second student climate march.

I also went on a photoshoot/day trip focused originally on photographing the protests outside the isreali embassy.
In the end I actually walked from tottenham court road station where i bought a roll of hp5 to Barons court. On this day trip I bumped into multiple protests including a pro brexit, vegan and cameroonian embassy demonstration. In the future i should probably be more organised so I can actually arrive on time to the march, however my sporadic exploration actually led to a very diverse photoshoot with loads of different protests and stories and a good bit of excercise.]]> 2019-05-16 23:03:10 UTC https://padlet.com/joelistorees3/wo97pjhs5n9r/wish/361005109 joelistorees3 https://padlet.com/joelistorees3/wo97pjhs5n9r/wish/361006106 Last week I watched the award winning selma, a film set around the three peaceful marches into Selma, Alabama lead by Martin Luther King Jr and others which contributed to the passing of the Voting rights act, which without such an act black citizens in Selma were blocked from voting.
I added this alongside some photos from Bruce Davidson as research in my book, the imagery of the film tied in very well with my themes Body language and especially support as well as the project as a whole.
I visited one of the final Extinction rebelion demonstrations and photographed as much as I could, later printing out and sticking the photos into my book.
I also did some more research this time focusing on one of my recent favourite photographers, Charlie Kwai. I was inspired by my favourite Don Mcullin book to make the book black and white This also held up consistency wise as the lighing was often very different between protests. I also experimented with different layout styles before sending the book off to order, what I ended out with was a page layout displaying multiple different techniques of printing and placing images including, full double page spreads, multiple image pages and full page bleed without borders. I also expermented with and without annotating/descriptions and the final compromise was to only annotate certain photos with more interesting context/background.

Allot of his photography features protest of akind which of course links straight to my project. Obviously the surroundings and situation of his photos are of a much more serious nature but I can still see similarities in framing and link my work to his.
I also was recomended to watch the french drama film La Heine which is set around a very crucial 24 hours in the lives of three young men from a very poor suburb of Paris. Taking place after a riot in their Projects where a local arab boy has been hospitalised, the film follows the main characters as they become further uncomfortable in their surroundings, hounded by police and their journey is full of unfortunate blunders with dangerous consequences. I was very impressed with the film, I especially apreciated the directing and camera work using different lenses for example to isolate them in their surroundings in central paris and wider lenses to communicate their closeness to the suburb they grew up in. I also loved the Artistic choice fot the film to be all in black and white, while it was filmed in colour this was later changed in post to highlight the actually very somber and sad story and match that mood.
Aswell as those final two research tasks I set out to reach above the bar and make a second final peice this time in the form of a large print to go alongside the book. I made a selection of 8 of my favourite photos that i thought would look good and represent my project theme well printed big and put on the wall at the exhibition. I then left it down to my classmates to narrow down the option to 3 of the photos which worked out well the majority of the people voting choosing the same 3 photos interestingly.
