Carnival in Naples has very ancient origins. In the 18th century, the king Charles of Bourbon used to organize huge celebrations all over the city. He used to build the so-called “cuccagne”, wooden structures covered with food, which was given away to the people. Also the neapolitan nobles loved Carnival, throwing elegant costume parties in the most beautiful palaces of the city of Naples. Neapolitans love these traditions, that's why, even this year, has been organized in Naples the Eighteenth-Century Neapolitan Carnival, a costume party that remindes us to a typical carnival party of that period.

This custom has very ancient origins: people used to eat lasagna before the period of deprivation and sacrifice of Lent, because they didn't want to feel hungry during them. Lasagna is prepared with fresh egg pasta, Bolognese sauce and béchamel.

Linked to the most popular masks, there's a song, the “Tarantella Napoletana” (Neapolitan Tarantella). The tarantella is a quick Italian folk dance in duple time that gets its name from Taranto, a province in southern Italy’s Apulia region. Coincidentally, Taranto also lent its name to the big ol’ hairy spider called Lycosa tarantula. There’s a popular legend involving tarantulas, tarantellas and a dancing hysteria called “tarantism”: if a tarantula bites you, the only way to expel the poison from your body is to dance like mad.

As a dance and folk music staple of southern Italy, the tarantella served as an inspiration for numerous composers in the Western classical tradition.

In the 17th century the popular mask of the «Spanish» was famous even if little documented, and some people assumed it was the antagonist of Pulcinella, the Spanish Captain. The characteristic of this mask was its garment, made up of: a cape, a feathered hat, lace on the shoes and a sword.
The Spaniard, according to the descriptions of that time, went around with a parade of unmasked chicks that drove him through the streets of the center. These with their festive tambourines attracted popular attention and once arranged in a circle, they invited the Spaniard to dance the tarantella.
