I turned the Parachute project into an experiment. I have not got much video footage, but I still managed to put a video together (heavily compressed though, as not to upset Padlet). I put most effort into documenting my experiment and writing a paper on the experiment I did. That was when I still had time at my disposal.

I really wanted to drop it from the roof and see what happens. managed to lower the speed by reducing overall weight of the parachute by removing icy-pole stick and some wool strings. I decided to use tissue paper instead of newspaper just to create a lighter parachute and I think I made a good decision there.

I added a little basket at the bottom and assumed that more weight would help the parachute to actually open up but it had made the overall parachute drop quite fast. I lowered the weight ( from 5 10c coins to 2 10 cent coins) and it seemed to work much better. Firstly I measured and cut out 2 newspaper squares measuring 25 cm and 30 cm, then I cut out the same sizes in soft, thin plastic bags.
 I wondered, should the parachute be a circular shape, so I cut out paper and plastic circles. Next, I measured 50 cm lengths of garden string and attached 4 per parachute, evenly spaced.  Then, I tested, as you can see on the video.
After testing outdoors, I tried a few indoors and found this better as the breeze was no longer a contributing factor of the air resistance and drag. I wanted to try a larger area parachute and made a 40 cm square and a similar sized area circle (the circle needed more string attachments due to the circumference). These floated best indoors with the lightest weight attached which was a peg.

We both went our separate ways and began building. His first attempt involved using an entire garbage bag! He soon realised that it was just too big, so he modified it, and was happy with his design. He put considerable thought into his weights, using trial and error until he was happy. I gathered my materials and began my build. I was sure that my design was better and would win...it wasn't to be. Our aim was to have the parachute that floated the longest (hit the ground last). His was easily the winner - his parachute was bigger and so the air was able to build and hold his in the air for a longer amount of time. After dropping out parachutes from the roof and collecting them, I said 'I'm sure mine is still better, you must have thrown yours higher in the air'. So from where we were standing, we both threw them in the air, his was a definite winner! The design itself is really basic and I used very light wrapping paper for the parachute. I used a cup to hold the four sides of the strings open so that it can have air resistance and push the parachute open for more time and trap the wind so it can glide for a longer amount of time. The strings need to be the same length and keep them untangled. My attempts failed to have the parachute glide for more than 3 seconds.I then used a lego skydiver but the parachute performed even worse. My conclusion is that although none of my attempts allow the parachute to fly for more than 5 seconds, I do see that the cup helps with keeping the parachute open, whereas the skydiver just falls flat. The cup was also lighter in weight which plays a major role. One thing I also did not do was test it outdoors and at a higher point. It's a busy week and I will need to go to the park to do that. I tried to different methods with the square parachute and the oval design which was interesting as the oval seems to travel in a slower motion much like a standard parachute and not like the square one that didn't seem to capture much air and fell straight to the ground.
