Her illness caused her to sprint around, to dive under the furniture, to contort in pain, and more. Her symptoms though may have been a combination of many factors including guilt, boredom, delusional psychosis, epilepsy, child abuse, stress, and even asthma. Witchcraft was increasingly getting more and more popular after some of Betty's friends began to act strangely, just as Betty did. When a doctor was called in to officially diagnose the girls, he came to a conclusion that the problems that they were facing, originated from something from the supernatural world. The doctor's diagnosis was seemingly likely considering what many of the Puritans were believing to be true... that the witches were targeting children. Due to the many accusations of people being witches, trials were held, leading to the deaths of so many. The idea and belief of total depravity was common among the Puritans. Along with the beliefs of predestination, grace, and limited atonement. Calvinism also brought along the idea of being a community that ran on theocracy where church and state were blended, governed by God. It was also from the Calvinistic beliefs that the existence of witchcraft got a bad name, adding to the fear of witches and witchcraft.

That he was actively trying to undermine the Puritans' mission of spreading the ideas of/helping the world become more pure. Whenever a disaster strikes or something such as a natural disaster occurs, guess who's to blame, the one who wreaked all that havoc? These people did not like the Catholic Church, so much in fact that they wanted to get rid of it.
They were soon ordered to persecution by the King because of it.  After doing so, they were going to build something new and improved, based upon the ideas of John Calvin. Where they were headed was to the "New World," also known as North America.
