Definition of Assessment:
When you have a goal in life. And you have to assess whether or not you can complete that goal. To see where you are, and how much more you need to work on. Or if you have accomplished your goal. Believer in SMART goals

Go-To Assessments:
- Educator rubric ( Make it your own, to match your expectations)

Work Smarter, Not Harder:
- Rubrics help, no guessing games
- How can we use formative assessments to see what your students know (less homework = less grading)
- Thumb up
- Whiteboards

Story:
Using rubrics helps teach students what is expected. They're able to self-assess and have conferences with the kids to help them work towards their goals. When students reach their goals they have more confidence to reach that next goal.

Advice to New Teachers:
- From day one, have procedures and routines. Don't try to wing it at the beginning of the year and then try to establish rules. By then, students are in a set schedule and routine. If they do not pick up the routines and rules you need to take the time to reteach them. Students love and need structure.

Hot Topic Books:
- Learning by Doing
- Excellence in Every Classroom by John Wink
- The Cult of Pedagogy (Podcasts/Articles)
- Think Again Podcast by Adam Grant
- Simon Sinic Podcast

Why Teach:
I teach for the kids, I love my content area. I care that they have a connection with adults. I care that kids are given an opportunity to show their gifts and strengths. That they have an opportunity to grow and develop into independent, strong-thinking, brave individuals. It's a unique privilege to be able to have this impact on kids.

Definition of Assessment:
Make observations in the classroom. Day to day, you observe what your students are mastering and what they are still struggling with. Your role as an educator and what you can support them with. Not that paper-pencil assessment, more the day-to-day of what you're noticing and wondering.

Go-To Assessments:
- Small groups, the opportunity for every level of student to get your time
- Need to make small groups! They are worth it, need to have small groups every single day with every kid

Working Smarter, Not Harder:
- Be a team (everyone has different strengths, divide and conquer)
- Use students that have mastered the topic, they can "teach" in a better, more understandable way for students

Story:
She was a 3rd-grade teacher of two students. Both students were diagnosed with dyslexia. She listened to the parents and also did research. She read "The Gift of Dyslexia" a book written for teachers to understand what to do on a day-to-day with a student who has dyslexia. She had the students in reading groups, and she realized that these two students had no comprehension. She found that there were colored strips to put over the words in a story. These helped the two students become more confident with their skills. During the morning meeting, the boy shared about his dyslexia and he thanked them for helping him, for being patient, etc. Then the girl wanted to share her story. The boy chose to share because he trusted his classmates, and the girl became brave because of the boy. These two students are now ready for middle school, they are becoming ready for the real world.

Advice to a New Teacher:
- You need to make relationships with your students, parents, and the staff
- Take the time, it's important in the beginning
- Find out what every child loves, and show that you care
- Don't just leave an email, take the time to call
- You don't have to love everyone on your staff, but you have to love something about every one

Hot Topic Books:
- The Gift of Dyslexia
- The Morning Meeting Book
- Books that make a connection with you, that you can implement
- Despite the Best Intentions

Why Teach:
- The impact
- Teaching is an important job
- You are having your students think about what they can do in their lives
- Encourage and motivate your students
- Teaching matters, you make a difference love and support kids, but also challenge them
- You get to be part of their story!
