The Baobab Tree

The Baobab tree is a plain leafless tree. There are many myths about how this came to be. One of the many myths of how out of the twelve months in a year there are only three months with the expected vibrant leaves. One of the simpler myths is how the devil plucked it's root out of the ground and placed it back but upside down. A simpler myth is " The baobab was among the first trees to appear on the land. Next came the slender, graceful palm tree. When the baobab saw the palm tree, it cried out that it wanted to be taller. Then the beautiful flame tree appeared with its red flower and the baobab was envious for flower blossoms. When the baobab saw the magnificent fig tree, it prayed for fruit as well. The gods became angry with the tree and pulled it up by its roots, then replanted it upside down to keep it quiet." Which is a very long myth i must say, and I am having second thoughts about it. But of the myths I thought this was the most interesting

The acacia and baobab trees are common in African savannas. In order for the grasses to survive the dry season and the periodic fires, they have developed an adaptation that allows them to grow quickly when there is adequate water. Then when water becomes scarce, the grasses turn brown to limit water loss
