Belém Tower is officially the Tower of Saint Vincent (Portuguese: Torre de São Vicente) is a 16th-century fortification located in Lisbon that served as a point of embarkation and disembarkation for Portuguese explorers and as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.[1][2] It was built during the height of the Portuguese Renaissance, and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style,[3] but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles.[4] The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastionand a 30-metre (98.4 ft),[5] four-storey tower. Since 1983, the tower has been, along with the Jerónimos Monastery. It is often portrayed as a symbol of Europe's Age of Discoveries[2] and as a metonym for Portugal or Lisbon, given its landmark status. It has incorrectly been stated that the tower was built in the middle of the Tagus and now sits near the shore because the river was redirected after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. As a result of the Liberal revolution that took place in 1820, all convents and monasteries in Portugal were closed in 1834, expelling the clergy and workers.

In an attempt at survival, someone from the Monastery puts on sale in this store some pastries, quickly called "Pastéis de Belém".

At the time, the Belém area was far from the city of Lisbon and the route was provided by steamboats. However, the grandeur of the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower attracted visitors who quickly got used to tasting the delicious pastries originating in the Monastery.

In 1837, the manufacture of the "Pastels of Belém" began, in facilities attached to refining, according to the old "secret recipe", coming from the Monastery. Transmitted and exclusively known by the master pastry chefs who manufacture them by hand, in the "Secret Workshop". This recipe remains the same to this day.

In fact, it has everything to do with its origin. The first recipe of the Pastel de Belém was created in 1837 by the monks of the emblematic Jerónimos Monastery. To date, the recipe is kept secret and therefore becomes a true specialty! Thus, only at the Fábrica Pastéis de Belém, the family pastry with more than 100 years where they are made, you will find the original Pastéis de Belém. Only there these little custard tarts can be called that since its name was even patented!
