Columbus was sponsored by the Spanish King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (pictured below), however before being sponsored by them he wanted to be sponsored by the King of Portugal who refused to sponsor him. The monarchs of Spain were so inclined to sponsor Columbus because they were intrigued by potential financial benefits and Columbus wanted to spread Christianity as well to the New World which the devout Queen Isabella supported whole heartedly.

August 3rd, 1492 Columbus and around 100 other men and 3 total ships set sail for the Indies (Asia.) He first reached land on October 12, 1492 at the island San Salvador. They spent over 3 months exploring. Afterwards, they went to Cuba and Hispaniola thinking they had reached the Indies (their initial goal.) Thinking it was the Indies they searched for gold and prized treasure to which they were minimally successful receiving a small amount of gold from Native Americans. They left less than 50 men in a fort and returned to Spain with the remaining men and 2 ships.

Columbus and his men arrived back at Spain on March 15, 1493. Word of his success spread quickly and he was received graciously and with awards from the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. On his second travel he went with much more, 1200 men, 17 ships, and six month's worth of supplies. They found the men left in Hispaniola were killed by Native Americans and the fort was destroyed. Men became unruly so Columbus sent 12 ships back for resupplies along with a collection of their minimal finds. When they came back, the men were still unstable, treated the Indians horribly and eventually Columbus couldn't control them and returned to Spain in 1496.

His 3rd and 4th travels never got nearly as successful as his first expedition. Columbus is most successful and known because he was the first to discover (although unintentionally) and explore the Americas and moreover he attempted to establish the first Spanish colonies in the New World, which he also acted as governor for throughout his journeys. Although they did not necessarily form good relationships with the areas he settled in because of the unfair treatment the Native Americans received from the barbaric men, he still helped establish the first settlements in the Americas and left a long lasting mark in history.
