What makes dialogue authentic? If you were reading a story that didn't have names or any ways to identify the characters, how might you be able to distinguish what a 12 year old said from a 20 year old character?

Something that makes dialogue is the characters. If the narrator is telling you what they are saying, it doesn't seem as real as when you see the direct conversation. A way to distinguish who a 12 year old and a 20 year old is to say the words they use. A 12 year old wouldn't use that much slang as a 20 year old and a 20 year old would be more mature than a 12 year old and would show that in words.

I think the way a dialogue is or can be authentic can be like the actions they take when they speak, or when they think. It means we can basically get into their minds and their "personality" and make inferences about who and how they are. I guess if I was reading a story and had to distinguish a 12 year old and a 20 year old, as a kid maybe the vocab and how mature they are. ALSO look out for what they can legally do. Obviously a kid can't drive.

To distinguish what a 12 year old said from a 20 year old is the words they say. the 20 year old might have bigger and more complex words while 12 year olds may use simpler words. and maybe the phrases they use. You can tell a 12 year old is talking is the type of slang they use, like the new slang.
What makes dialogue authentic is that is made of words that give a meaning and in many ways can contribute to the book (or story). I would be able to distinguish the dialogue of a 12 year old from a 20 year old because of the vocabulary. a 20 year old person would be able to use bigger words that might seem odd to a 12 year old brain (unfamiliar words). A 20 year old's dialogue may sound more mature than those of a 12 year old who uses some slang and abreviated words.
