Ideas for what we could do & where we could eat. The itineraries are not set in stone but we can pick what sounds fun and skip some if we want – the idea with them is to give you an idea of which places are close to each other. Thursday/Tuesday include tips on travel, but otherwise I've created itineraries based on areas/activities, it doesn't matter on which of the days we do them for the most part, weather is more essential.

Take the I train (left track) towards Helsinki and ride all the way to the end.

You will need tickets that cover ABC sectors. Unfortunately it's not possible to pay by tapping your card, so you will need to either use the HSL app or buy a ticket from the machines on the platform. I will look into this in more detail and will update you.

Note that for some bizarre reason ticket gates/turnstiles in public transport aren't a thing. So you need to buy a ticket, but you don't actually need to show it to anyone or anything during your travel, unless someone in a blue or green uniform comes up to you and asks for it. In that case you've managed to get on a train that is subject to a random ticket checking, and everyone found to ride the train without one will be issued an 80€ ticket :D

"Helsinki" usually means the central railway station when used in public transport. Even if you get on the wrong train at the airport, you will eventually reach it.

Päärautatieasema = central railway station in Finnish
Rautatientori = lit. railway market, marketplace on the right side of the station.
Elielinaukio = Eliel square, square to the left of the station.

The central railway station is quite nice, esp. inside, designed by Eliel Saarinen (father of American-Finnish architect Eero Saarinen who designed e.g. the futuristic JFK terminal and the St Louis arch). It's a good example of Finnish Jugendstil, ie Art Nouveau of the turn of the century.

There may be some restaurants open at the arrivals hall (the public side) at the airport, and there is an Alepa supermarket which has plenty of ready-to-eat meals, salads, bakery products...

Your hotel will of course also be able to help you with food I think :)

You don't need to take anything out of your luggage when you go through security.

There's lots of shops at the airport, focusing mostly on fashion/design, alcohol, and beauty products. There's also plenty of shops after passport control (ie non-EU flights area), plus a nice area with benches and a 360 "audiovisual experience" of Finnish nature through the seasons.

My preferred place to eat/have coffee is the Nordic Kitchen in the non-EU side, but it's nothing special, so if you're not hungry or have brought stuff with you, you won't lose anything by not eating there. There's also a Moomin-themed café :D

The airport has expanded a lot since I think you have last been here, so just make sure you don't leave getting to your gate to the very last minute or you may have to run :D

It and the Market square + Esplanadi park are the most touristy areas so quite crowded (Nordic version of crowds though, not Oxford St type). However, the cathedral especially is very pretty (from the outside) and there are lovely little shops around it.

WARNING! If you decide to grab an ice cream, beware of the sea gulls. Good hearty Nordic food, e.g. elk sausages, meatballs, pyttipannu, pan cakes, French toast... Only open on evenings. I have a feeling Lorna may actually have visited this 15 years ago with us?

Qulma: a lunch restaurant run by this guy called Mark Aulén, serves good soup and bread, for some reason super popular with the Japanese.

Café Lov: A German café run by German(-speaking) staff, serves super good Flammkuchen with Schwarzwald ham.

Café No 5: Run by older Vietnamese ladies, serves excellent pho. I used to spot the former Minister of the Interior, Maria Ohisalo, here often during lunchtime :D

Café Engel (by the Cathedral): Lovely Nordic/French bistro-style food, but often super full.

Koreahouse: The first and best Korean in Helsinki, offers all your Korean classics. Korean tourists come here by busload.

Kind of between the Cathedral area and Kruununhaka is also a place called Kanavaranta, old red-brick storage buildings turned into restaurants and cafés. Johan & Nyström in particular is known for its coffee. However, this is so close to your hotel that you can add a visit to J&N at any point of the trip.

Within a couple of hundred meters from your hotel is also the Old Market Hall (est. 1889) which has small restaurants and Allas Sea Pool (seawater swimming pools, concerts, overpriced drinks and a lovely view).
