Integrating newly arrived students in the school is a very challenging task for schools, as these students often have a quite different background than other students and need at least in the beginning a lot of additional support. On top of that, even the most basic communication can be a huge challenge in the beginning. This is, as you will also hear in the videos in this module, a task that you as a teacher cannot do alone, but you need your school management and other partners on board.  If you manage to get the outside support you or your students need, you already did a big job.
One big task for the whole school is to be curious about the background of their newly arrived migrant students and to create a welcoming and safe environment, where children who have often experienced very difficult situations in their past, can feel safe. But you will also hear in this course, that working with newly arrived migrant is is not only a huge challenge but can also be very rewarding and a big opportunity, as many children are very grateful that they can attend school and are eager to learn the new language quickly, thereby - in an ideal scenario -  invigorating others and driving forward innovations such as a stronger focus on personalisation or innovative approaches to timetabling and use of school spaces.
Maybe you also already made this experience yourself? We are eager to hear about your experiences as well! As we already stressed in the last course, newly arrived migrants are actually a very diverse group with different backgrounds and experiences. In the same way, teaching them is a unique challenge and opportunity for each teacher. Use this course to share your own stories!
For those teachers that do not actually teach newly arrived migrants yet, you are also very welcome to follow this course. You will find in the Padlets some specific questions about how you teach newly arrived migrants at your school. means, to me, having he opportunity of rethink my way of teaching; my way of welcome new students (very often refugees have a hard story behind them), even my values and priorities. Having to deal with people -especially children- coming from countries where war, poverty, epidemics, bad living  conditions forced them to take a almost hopeless journey to survive, gives us the opportunity to question our way of life and our system of values.
As a teacher and an educator, I need to be flexible and resilient in welcoming these children with respect for their culture and traditions, gibing them help and support. Some of these sport activity are proved very useful to improve the relation among pupils and re quite commonly practised during the year. Very often, however, migrant students are put in regular classes from their arrival, with no preparation. It becomes very difficult to create a trusting atmosphere; the more is curiosity or indifference, specially if the new arrived has no means to communicate.
