Readers, Writers, Texts
1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?
We study literature by analyzing how discovering how words can shape one's perception, in order to further understand how people have different perspectives on life and other matters. We study TTTC in order to discover the perspective of life of a war veteran, and to understand one can be shaped differently than others due to some events.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
We're affected by literary texts in various ways such as sculping our perception of certain subjects or impacting the way we believe in idealogies. We are impacted by TTTC as we discovered how wars can impact individuals and their surroundings significantly.

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?

Meaning is constructed through the allusions of O'brien's memories of the war, such as his killing of a man who he named Heidi. Negotiated by creating a connecting bond between O'brien and readers, expressed in rhetorical terms such as paradox, allusion, irony, and more. Meaning is interpreted as a way of perception, shaped after a set of events on an individual.

4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?

The structure of style of TTTC allowed the readers to engage deep into the life as a soldier back in the Vietnam war, then witness the trauma the war implemented into individuals, and how one can be shaped though such event.

Another one was that though discrimination has been long gone from society, the painful memories are still present in the minds of those who endured.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

The novel specifically addresses the issue of power by displaying the perspective of those who are controlled by such powers. The issue of gender, specifically motherhood is portrayed within the novel: the strength of motherhood is constantly pitted against the horrors of slavery. In a number of ways, slavery simply does not allow for motherhood. On a basic level, the practice of slavery separates children from their mothers, as exemplified by Sethe’s faint recollections of her own mother. Since it is so likely for a slave-woman to be separated from her children, the institution of slavery discourages and prevents mothers from forming strong emotional attachments to their children. The writing itself utilized to potray the story of Beloved did an efficient job in engaging the audience within the story's detail through the different perspectives of slaves which the audiences could experience.

Attach the panels you found most fascinating and that you discussed during our final Harkness here

We found ourselves veiled and separated from our friends. (Page 4)

In this quote, Marjane refers to the veil as a method of separation not just from the public and a woman's body, but also between different groups of people and culture. Though she enjoyed a co-educational, secular and bilingual education prior to the Revolution, after Islamic Law was put into place, her world became much smaller as she was forced into a dogmatically-religious, single-gender and monolingual education. The reference to the veil here serves to represent not only the opression of woman, but also a curtain of sorts between Iran and the rest of the modern world after the Revolution of 1979. Iran, like Marjane, was veiled and separated from its "friends" (other modernized nations) after the Revolution.

As for me, I love the King, he was chosen by God.

Page 19

In this quote, Marjane parrots what she learned in school. She is too young to understand that her education is controlled by the government. To her, it is inconceivable that she would be taught something in school that is not true. Her belief that the King (Shah) of Iran was chosen by God is indicative of her fierce loyalty, even at a very young age. Iran comes first in her heart, even as she grows up and learns of its problems from her parents. Marjane comes to be proud of her parents' active roles in the resistance to repression, and learns to be skeptical of even the things she learns in school--but at the same time she never loses her loyalty to Iran itself, despite its different corrupt governments.

What were some global issues you explored in Persepolis? Consider the Harkness discussion and other ideas that came up during class discussion.

The global issues i was able to explore in Persepolis was gender. Persepolis opens at the moment in Iranian history when it becomes obligatory for women to wear the veil and schools become segregated by gender. The Revolution brings many changes to Tehran, but the changes imposed on women and men in how they dress and look—women must cover their heads, men must cover their arms and not wear a necktie—might be the most immediately relevant and personally frustrating. Over the course of the graphic novel, Marjane begins to understand that to be a woman in her new society is to be subjugated to a lesser role than the one she expected to have in her younger years.

Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.

Persepolis connects to the other works we've read such as the Chronicle of a Death Foretold or Beloved. Both of the texts deal with the global issue of gender obligations, for example, Marjane progresses to learn the role of women which the society has set for them but desires to break it, while COADF deals with a woman who is now obligated to follow such ideals of the society.

How does Persepolis connect to our world today?

Persepolis connects to our world today regarding the issue of women's role in the society. Consider honor, morality, perspective, fate, gender norms etc. The more detailed you are, the more useful this will be for your IO.

Global issues I was able to notice in this work was the social obligation to individuals: gender. Another global issue I saw in this work was the hypocrisy of guilt which individuals possess.
