Trump travel ban 3: Austin Catey - Mod 1

This article provides the perspective from Ebial Zazkok, a teacher at Ohio State University who is a Syrian refugee. He moved to the United States with his family after the Assad regime took power in Syria. He touches on the tough screening process to get into the country and how his 19 year old son had to wait two years for additional screening in order to enter the country. He argues that "Trump's latest travel ban is not necessary to keep Americans safe". (Zazkok 2017) Throughout the article he touches on his story along with others from co-plaintiffs in part of a lawsuit against this new travel ban. Ebial talks about how his eldest daughter, Turkie, was not allowed to enter the country and how if this new travel ban goes through she will never be reunited with them. Another story discusses how Fahed married his wife he met in Yemen, in 2012. They were living in Yemen until her travel to the U.S. could be approved, yet when their second daughter needed medical treatment in the states, she wasn't allowed to come. They are still waiting for the petition to go through and the new ban would separate them from each other. Overall, this article provides an emotionally charged perspective from someone who opposes Trump's travel ban. It brings up a very good point and relates to our first chapter about ethical reasoning and arguments. Ebial gives his ethical reasons for why this ban would be bad for not only him, but many Americans in similar positions. I feel like this is a good first article as it brings up a very important fact about how not everyone has similar morals and how ethical arguments must be backed up. He justifies his reasoning by making the reader believe that the ban is indeed detrimental and will hurt more than it will help. This is a key, introductory aspect of ethical reasoning and arguments.

Zazkok, Eblal. “Trump travel ban 3 may shatter my family forever - and its not even needed.” USA Today, Gannett Satellite Information Network, 16 Oct. 2017, www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2017/10/16/trump-travel-ban-3-shatter-my-family-forever-wont-make-america-safer-eblal-zazkok-columns/766036001/.
