What is the poem’s tone?....Is the poem ironic?

Emily Dickinson's way of expressing herself through poetry shows itself through her eloquent words. She begins the poem talking about this letter that the "World" has never written to her which later indicates her sentimental yet spiteful attitude. As she is a recluse herself, when she would reach out and hear no response, it was disappointing nonetheless. "To Hands I cannot see-.....Judge tenderly - of me." A phrase that reminds us that Death is unpredictable, and to appreciate what she has to say while she is still alive.

Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

One symbol that is in "This is my Letter to the World" by Emily Dickinson is the letter she writes. Her letter symbolizes her message to the world that she never interacted with. Another symbol in the poem are the "Hands I cannot see" which could be in my eyes interpreted as the hands of new life, or the hands of death. These symbols are not universal but are instead my interpretation of what Emily Dickinson has written.

"This is my letter to the world, That never wrote to me", a quote Emily Dickinson wrote. Personification was implemented in this quote, figurative language language was a well used way of expressing Dickinson emotions. This use of the personification is a message that is trying to be conceived to the audience. It is a reference to her being isolated, and that her ideas are not able to be heard. She uses the word,"world", to imply that she wants to be heard and wants to connect with the outside world, in which she is not too familiar with. She also writes, "never wrote to me", a reference; death. Her obsession with death is sprinkled in the poem, she claims that death is a mystery while connecting it to the use of "world", and that she so hopes that we; the world; will find her poems.

Having a hermit-like lifestyle, Emily Dickinson was a lonely poet. She draws this sympathetic image of how the world ignores her; no one appreciates what she has to say. She connects this image to her interpretation on Death and intertwines them together, making one unified pattern of the importance of preparation. These images on being prepared for "Hands" that may take you away at any time leaves an inspirational impact on making the most of your life.

The theme of this poem can be interpreted as Emily Dickinson trying to send her message into the world; and that her message is that the reason why we live and why we die is unknown, so judge people gently. This poem is Emily Dickinson trying to spread the message of being kind to other people.

Emily Dickinson lived a repetitive life. Not leaving her room for almost 30 years, not even for her father's funeral, she dedicated her whole life into writing these poems. Therefore connecting this poem to her life is a piece of cake as we know she wants to impact the world. But not being given the recognition or appreciation, she wants others to value what others have to say as you never know when they are leaving you.

How does the use of capitalization influence the poem?

In the poem, Emily Dickinson capitalizes many words, words that do not usually have the implement of capitulation. As an example she capitalizes words like, sweet, her, majesty, nature, and few other words. I believe that Dickinson chooses to capitalize these words to bring out importance to them, signifying their importance. Emily always had a different view on the world than others, like never going outside and being seen as "ghostly". These words' capitalization is a way of notifying the reader to them, almost as she sees the words as part of herself. She may find connection with these so words, like nature; something she never got to experience within her lifetime, or Majesty; a term she might associate with beauty, or perhaps even death.
