What called me to the field of CYC

From an early age, I became aware of the critical role that safe, supportive relationships play in the lives of young people. Witnessing both the presence and absence of those supports in the lives of people around me sparked a deep curiosity and compassion within me. Over time, this evolved into a strong desire to be someone who could offer consistent, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care. The field of Child and Youth Care (CYC) felt like a natural fit because it not only centers the voices and experiences of young people, but also acknowledges the systemic and relational factors that shape their lives.

I was drawn to the CYC field by its commitment to relational practice, social justice, and holistic well-being. I appreciate how the work integrates emotional, social, and cultural understanding with real-time, front-line care. The opportunity to build meaningful connections, advocate for change, and create safer spaces for youth—especially those navigating complex life experiences—is what motivates me. Through coursework and placements, I’ve seen the real impact that CYC practitioners can have, and it has only strengthened my commitment to walk alongside young people as a source of support, respect, and empowerment.

What I Hope to Accomplish After Graduation

Once I graduate from the Child and Youth Care program, I hope to carry forward the values and principles that have grounded my learning: relational practice, anti-oppressive frameworks, trauma-informed care, and youth voice. I aim to work directly with young people in school, community, or mental health settings—where I can continue to support their development, amplify their voices, and walk with them through their journeys.

My goal is to be a consistent, compassionate presence for children and youth, particularly those who have been impacted by systemic barriers such as anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism, poverty, intergenerational trauma, or mental health challenges. I also hope to be part of an organization or community initiative that actively works toward equity and systemic change, not just at the individual level, but through advocacy, policy influence, and inclusive program design.

Long-term, I would love to continue learning through further education or certifications in mental health or expressive arts therapy, and eventually take on leadership or mentorship roles that allow me to support other frontline workers in the field. Wherever my path takes me, my priority will remain rooted in care, connection, and justice for the young people I serve.
