The use of VoiceOver

In the beginning of the film, Jim Carrey's character is in a loss of hope. He is a depressed individual looking for love not knowing he already lost it. Joel talks about, in the first person narrative, that he is not an impulsive person yet decides to hop on a train to Mantauk. He then goes on to say that he hasn't written in his book for two years. We can say that those two years was after Naomi and him broke up. At the end of the first person VoiceOver, he says "maybe I should get back with Naomi" since he can't even look at another woman, until Kate Winslet's character, Clementine, speaks to him first.

Use of Lighting

I thought it was interesting to look at a particular scene where the lighting spoke a lot about the character. Joel goes to visit clementines at work. She doesn't even recognize him. She then talks to another dude which happened to be her boyfriend, Patrick, one of the erasers. At this point, Joel is visibly upset and walks out fo the building but while he is walking out, the lights gradually begin turning off as he leaves the building until it's all black. I think this shows how his mental state is so weak and sad ever since Naomi and him broke up, and then when he meets another girl and she wants him erased from her mind is the icing on the cake.

Use of sound

An interesting aspect of the film is the sound. Throughout the film, Joel hears diegetic sound. He hears what is happening while his memory is being erased. Specifically when he's on a date, in one of his memories, with Clem. After she beards him for never cleaning the hair out of the drain of the shower, he hears Patrick giving her a phone call. Joel is the only person that can hear it. Joel can hear what is happening while his memory is being erased.

The beginning is the end

I wanted to draw a comparison to how the beginning is the end is in the film and also another. Int his movie, the beginning is him waking up from his memories being erased of Clementine, but the audience doesn't know that. The end is that exact scene but the difference is the we get to see that Joel and Clem meet again and decide to give it another shot even though those same feelings are going to come back. I compare this to Sunset Boulevard, the guy floating in the pool in the beginning is exactly what it is in the end.

It seems the meaning behind Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind is that even though you may go through heartbreak but also, laugh, cry and love each other, that its worth it. So you might as well give it a shot. Joel and Clem rather have the chance eat having good memories than not even having good memories at all.
