Okonkwo: "Well, there's no going back now. We are both dead, are we not? You want to know the answer, don't you? Well, fine, i'll tell you. I killed you because I could. You are nothing but a sacrifice and a burden to me. I killed you because from the start, I wanted to, but my family loved you so much, it was my last mercy for them. I care nothing for you, and that is it. Be grateful I sent you to your family, where you belong."

Ikemefuna: "It was a rhetorical question, father. I know you killed me because you fear weakness. You do not wish to be like your father, who was a kind, yet "weak" man. You prefer sufficing to the townsmen and your status rather than those who love you. That is the biggest weakness. You were my family, and I cared greatly for you. I did not wish to go back to my own family. I wished to stay with you, with Nwoye, with the village. But you took even that wish away from me, as you took me away from my real family."

Goodbye, Ikemefuna, for I shall never see you again."

Analysis of the dialogue: In this conversation, Ikemefuna is seen as very sorrowful, and he grieves over Okonkwo taking his life., hence, he is still in the waiting room of the afterlife, waiting to get his answer from Okonkwo. When he does, he begins to cry, stating "You prefer sufficing to the townsmen and your status rather than those who love you. That is your biggest weakness. You were my family, and I cared greatly for you." (Siddiqui 3) From hearing Okonkwo's answer to his question "Why did you kill me?," he begins to understand that there was no love for him from the very beginning. Okonkwo has always preferred his masculinity over love and family. This causes Ikemefuna to feel deeply hurt yet understanding, hence he says "You do not wish to be like your father." (Siddiqui 3) While answering Ikemefuna's question, Okonkwo can be seen as cold and unhurt by his actions, nor does he feel sorry for what he has done. He states "...and so I feel no sorrow towards your death, no sympathy, not a single trace of sadness for my loss, but rather a looming fear that now, the village men see me as a weak soul who could not even fight off the fear of killing a little boy who meant nothing to me." (Siddiqui 4) Okonkwo truly does care more about how he looks to the village men rather than the pain and shame of killing the boy he loved like his own son. He fears, even after his death, that the village higher-ups, townsmen, and ancestors look down upon him for not killing his son, but not being able to take his son's life right away. His statements and feels truly make him a cold-hearted and ruthless man with no emotions, just as he wanted.
