What I Think About It

Cynthia Li's essay on Japanese animator and director Hayao Miyazaki provides a solid perspective on his achievements as a "heroic" person that never fails to uphold his ideals. There are three things to point out in Li's work: the central theme, the delivery of nonfiction elements, and Hayao Miyazaki's life. First of all, the essay's theme, heroism, supplies the article with a good basis to write about Hayao Miyazaki. It allows the introduction to capture its readers' attention and consistently follows through the rest of the essay. Secondly, nonfiction elements, such as the essay format, personal opinion, and extensive research, were delivered clearly in the essay. Li articulately detailed the prowess of Miyazaki as an animator in her own opinion, adding snippets of quotes to support her opinions and show that she had done her research. This brings me to my next point, which is Hayao Miyazaki's life through the lens of Li. Personally, since the theme was on heroism and Miyazaki's openness to expressing his beliefs without fear, I expected to read more about his history of said openness, like when he was a chief secretary of a labor union in his youth or when he refused an invitation to the Academy Awards to protest the United States' involvement in the Iraq War. Although I don't necessarily intend to say Li's work could have included these experiences specifically, I do think there are several more famous instances that embody Miyazaki's fearlessness in expressing his beliefs that could have been added to the essay instead of repeating points that were already asserted. All this being said, I do believe Li's essay on Hayao Miyazaki is ultimately interesting, and it serves a good outlook on the animator's integrity and how he inspires others with his works.
