Analysis: The situation instantly becomes fatal, Antiphates doesn't even give Odysseus a chance to speak or at least reason with him for a welcome. The Laestrygonian's don't have a chance to abuse the basic rules of xenia as it instantly becomes a life-threatening situation.

Analysis: Aeolus does not show the welcome previously seen when Odysseus first arrived on the island, although her previously showed good xenia, now he doesn't want Odysseus there at all, nor to remain for any time at all. He wishes to protect his own people, thinking Odysseus is hated by the gods.

Link to Q: While this episode shows a hostility to Odysseus it is quite different to the reception in the passage. This shows a bad example of xenia as they have taken advantage of the mens situation as they can tell they are naive to their customs with desperation for a warming welcome. Although it could be said they show good xenia as they offer the men "honeyed fruit" and are welcoming when they arrive and follow all the rules a good host should.

Link to Q: This is a unique case as Odysseus' men have never been taken advantage of like this whilst still remaining positive. However Odysseus has encountered a similar situation when being held captive by Calypso.

Analysis: The Cyclops does not receive Odysseus well, and does not show him good xenia as he immediately asks him who he is and where he is from, it is normal custom to only ask this of a guest once you have fed them and let them feast. However, in turn, Odysseus did not show the Cyclops good xenia either as he and his men immediately began to eat the Cyclops' cheeses, so the Cyclops' reaction could have been expected.

Link to the Q: In relation to the passage Odysseus is received similarly in terms of being shown bad xenia, however the Laestrygonians do not even speak one word to him before they make their 'murderous intentions clear' and begin to try and eat him and a his men. Additionally, unlike the Cyclops' reaction it wouldn't have been expected from the Laestrygonians seeing as Odysseus showed them no bad xenia.

Analysis: The Cicones fight only when the occasion is really necessary - "when the occasion requires" - showing how they do have a level of hospitality. This attitude implies that they follow to rules of xenia, however this is disproved when violence is immediately inflicted, showing the cicones's vicious attitude to Odysseus

Link to Q: Odysseus is at first confronted by Echeneus when he comes to the palace of Alcinous; "It is unseemly.../...to let a stranger sit in the ashes at the hearth". However,  he is well received after this confrontation by both Alcinous and Arete; "mix a bowl of wine and fill the cups of all the company in the hall". Link: However we also see this bad  welcome with the Laestrygonians, who don't ask any questions but dive straight in to kill Odysseus and his men, "who promptly made his murderous intentions clear". Both of these are bad examples of xenia however extreme one is from the other.

ANALYSIS: '. The use of the words 'wanderer' and 'strayed' reiterates the fact that Odysseus is not Phaeacian and yet they have a duty to help him. The reception given to Odysseus is unexpected because this is not how you would expect him to be received because of his appearance.

However, she keeps him on the island against his will, as he wishes to return home.

Link to Q: This episode is entirely unique because even though Calypso provides for Odysseus, she is keeping him on the island. Analysis: After Odysseus flatters Nausicaa and asks for help, she offers him clothing, offers to show him around and offers to help him willingly, since his manners show that he is "not a bad man or a fool". The help she freely offers shows that she has good Xenia.

Yet Nausicaa can't take all the credit for this as it is Athene who gave her the strength to welcome him.

Link to Q: Odysseus is commonly welcomed like this as he is always viewed as heroic and god-like.
