Clark and Rumbold (2006) Reading is widely recognised as being critical to a person's growth in all facets of their existence. However, as a result of the proliferation of modern digital technologies, such as the ever-increasing acceptance of online social networking, the proliferation of mobile phones, the proliferation of televisions, and the proliferation of other forms of entertainment, the reading habit of the general public, particularly among the younger generation, is experiencing a decline.

Okeke (2000) saw the skill of reading as an invaluable tool that should be practised by all people. Reading, in his opinion, is one of the most essential things a person can do in their lifetime since it allows us to gain insight into the lives and experiences of other people while also broadening our own horizons in terms of knowledge, experience, and pleasure.

Learning is inextricably tied to reading in many different ways. Learning also contributes to an individual's entire mental, professional, and personal growth. Reading not only exposes people to new concepts, facts, and perspectives, but it also assists them in developing into more well-rounded individuals in every respect. According to what Birkerts (2010) pointed out, "in the course of a lifetime of reading, we store impressions... according to private systems of distribution." This means that we maintain factual information on one level, gained psychological insight on another plane, ideas on a third plane, and so on. Therefore, reading is very important for every single human being since it provides a multitude of advantages to individuals rather than just one. The reading habit is on the decrease among young people, thus it is vital to develop new methods to build a love of reading in their hearts and strengthen their reading habit. There are many different ways this may be accomplished. This cannot be accomplished in a single night. To bring back the glory days of reading, it is going to need deliberate efforts from everyone and the establishment of an environment that is favourable to reading in homes, educational institutions, libraries, and places of employment.

Akanda, A.

The Open Universuty argue that students can easily organize difficult content to make it easy to understand, and you can use your time efficiently to prepare for exams or essays. The effective way to take notes is to go through the process of writing points, summarizing them later, organizing and modifying them. After doing this effectively, the materials we think and take notes can be remembered for much longer.(The Open University, 2022)

The Open University(2022). Note-taking techniques. Consider going over the information you need to know many days in advance, breaking it up into manageable bits, and doing so in a variety of ways (for example, write flashcards one day and take practise tests the next). In other words, avoid cramming for the test.

Bad Study Habits

Academics need studying. Because a degree isn't enough, achieving it well is crucial. You'll learn what works and what doesn't. This list is compiled of ineffective study habits examples:

1. Procrastination

Procrastination and cramming are like two sides of the same coin. If you wait until the last minute to prepare for an exam, you will most likely end yourself having to memorise the facts and information rather than comprehending it. Even while this could work in the short term, you need to bear in mind that most information is cumulative and adds on to what you've already learned. This is because most subjects build upon one another. If you wait until the last minute to commit knowledge to memory, you are doing yourself a favour in the long run since information that is learned rapidly is also likely to be lost soon.

Instead, you should get into the habit of studying a little bit after class each night. You will be able to retain the knowledge you learn this manner since it will be easier for you to absorb it over time.

2. Multitasking

In spite of the fact that you may believe you can get more done in a shorter amount of time if you multitask, the reality is that you aren't really concentrating on any one item at the same time. People who are able to concentrate their efforts on a single task at a time are able to learn more and get more done. It is far more difficult to remember knowledge when your brain is always jumping between different activities. You run the risk of being exhausted more rapidly as well.

Make a strategy and prioritise what you will accomplish, and put your studies first to avoid the pitfalls of multitasking. You shouldn't go to the following item on your list unless you've completed the task at the top of the list first.

3. Absence

Online or in-person lectures improve learning. You'll already know the subject because you studied it in class. Missing class means spending a lot of time copying notes or questioning classmates about what you missed. You may spend that time researching and reviewing.

Attending class prevents missing it! To accommodate your class schedule, plan ahead. Online schools provide additional scheduling flexibility. If you attend a school with recorded lessons, you can study whenever and wherever you choose.

4. Distractions

Distraction-free! Distractions distract you like multitasking. Set up a distraction-free study place. Turn off the TV, put your phone on silent, and get to work.

5. Time Waste

You need time to study. Time management will help you learn each topic properly. Prioritizing activities, having a timetable, breaking down huge chores, generating incentives, and rising up earlier to gain more time are time management techniques.

6. Note-Taking

You should take notes in class. Thus, you may review class content. Start taking notes! If they're unorganised or hard to locate, you're not taking them. Discover your preferred note-taking approach.

7. Poor Diet

What you eat affects how you study. High-sugar, high-fat diets slow the brain and body. “Nutrition and Students' Academic Performance” by Wilder Research indicated that trans and saturated fats impair learning and memory. Instead of high-fat and sugary snacks, bring apples, almonds, greek yoghurt, raw vegetables, hummus, or roasted chickpeas for on-the-go eating.

8. All-nighters

Crammers often pull all-nighters. It means studying all night. You're remembering instead of comprehending and losing sleep. Sleep is essential for brain function and memory.

9. Skip Breaks

Take pauses while studying. Breaks help your brain comprehend and retain information. Instead of tiredness, a pause lets you refresh your thinking. Try these healthy study break ideas.

University of People (2023) Ineffective Study Habits You Need to Give Up NOW!
