August 6-9 1945, more than 220,000 Japanese people died from these bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but why? After the events on Pearl Harbor, the Manhattan Project occurred. The Manhattan Project was a project with more than 100,000 people, along side Oppenheimer, to create the atomic bombs Little Boy and Fat Man. These bombs were created to make Japan surrender and the amount of lives lost to war. The text to support this is, "The US wanted to force a quick surrender by the Japanese to reduce the number of American lives lost" (city.hiroshima.jp). The evidence applies to the thesis statement because of the fourth reason on the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Army.

President Truman and his colleagues decided the bombs will no longer be necessary. America did this to avoid invading Japan because they believed the Soviet Union (Russia) would join WW2 and help Japan. America decided to drop the bombs anyway to push Russia away and make Japan surrender. This is found in, "Truman and his colleagues knew that it was no longer necessary to release an atomic bomb to avert invading Japan...Truman's decision was further encouraged by a wanting to 'impress or scare the Russians'"(dh.scu.edu). This connects to the the thesis statement because without the bombing Japan would have never surrendered. Another reason for the bombing is to prevent the loss of Americans. This is found in, "Austin F. Morris titled his 1945 editorial "Bomb saved millions of lives." The number of deaths from an invasion of Japan would have been much greater, Morris argues. Morris continues, the thousands of troops in Japan, Korean mercenaries, citizens willing to fight, suicide boats, kamikaze planes, and mines would have caused more deaths than the atomic bomb"(dh.scu.edu). This is evidence that supports the second reason because without the bombings more lives would be lost.
