  Tokugawa Japan society was very structured.The emperor had the top rank but was just a figurehead. Below him were the daimyo, the powerful landholding samurai. Samurai warriors came next. The peasants and artisans were after them. The merchants were at the bottom but rise to the top overtime as Japan's economy expanded.

The portuguese sailors soon followed and went to Japan. 
I also learned that portuguese merchants involved themselves with chinese and southeast asia's trade. I didn't know that they brought things like glasses, clocks, firearms, and tobacco. I thought it would just be things similar to spices and other types of foods. Finally I learned that religious orders of Jesuits, Dominicans, and Franciscans came to convert the Japanese.

Firearms was the most important thing they got, it forever changed the tradition of the Japanese warrior whose main weapon had been a sword. Many samurai wanted to keep the sword as their main weapon, these people would lose their lives to musket fire in future combat.

The Japanese approved of this because they wanted to be associated with the muskets and other european goods that they wanted to purchase. The religious order of Jesuits, franciscans, and Dominicans ca,e to convert the Japanese to believe in christianity. The missionaries success mad Tokugawa Leysu upset, he thought that the invasion of Christianity was trouble someone. He didn't do anything about it because he thought that if he did speak up it would potentially damage Japan's economy. However, by 1612 he banned Christianity and his main focus was riding his country of all Christians. He later died in 1616 but Christianity was still banned, and it stayed that was for the next two decades under his successors. In 1637 an uprising in southern Japan of 30,000 peasant shook the Tokugawa shogunate. So many of the rebels were Christian, the shogun decided that Christianity was at the root of rebellion. Later, the shoguns persecuted Christians. European missionaries were killed or driven out of japan. Japanese were forced to demonstrate buddhism. Nagasaki, located on the west coast of Japan's kyushu Island is known for its volcanoes, beautiful offshore islands, historic buildings and hot-spring spas.
