This is a manual prepared by NCERT in the year 2019 on Art Integrating Learning (AIL). It has complete guidelines to incorporate AIL in our classrooms along-with stage specific learning objectives and suggestive pedagogical approaches. It is as good as NCF and being a government document, comes with authenticity of knowledge. AIL is a framework of Experiential Learning and is part of NISHTHA too.

It’s a long read so please read as per your convenience.

Enjoy reading…….

For me “Art” has always been synonymous with “magic”. Right from the cave paintings to graffities, modern installations, every bit of art stimulates, inspires and motivates to make meaning of our environment. Fiercely individualistic, it is empowering, sublime and fulfilling for the person who creates. While surfing the net, I was immensely surprised at the amount of research that has been done by academicians worldwide in integrating Art in education. Must confess that going through the videos the only thought that came to my mind was if only I could be a child again and have as much fun as these kids do back in school!! Most of the educators too seem to be enjoying the experience in the videos…check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CdwDDFrg7s Since I wanted to begin from scratch, decided to share a reading (by the Kennedy Center), albeit a bit lengthy, about the 6 principles basis which most of the learning in Art is integrated. Hope you will find some merit in it…

Art in education is an essential element in shaping an Individual. Therefore it has to start at a very early age. Friedrich Froebel, the father of kindergarten, believed that young children should be involved in both making their own art and enjoying the art of others. To Froebel, art activities were important, because they encouraged each child's "full and all-sided development" (Froebel, 1826).Here are few benefits which talks about starting art education at a preschool level.

Art integration is an approach to learning. This approach to teaching is grounded in the belief that learning is actively built, experiential, evolving, collaborative, problem-solving, and reflective. Art involves students holistically in the process of learning and helps in enhancing the learners creativity and imagination. These are some strategies to integrate art in teaching English.

While I agree in principle with the article's main point that we need to put more emphasis on Arts in our education curriculum, some of the other points mentioned are either factually incorrect or misleading. Also, some of the ways the article suggests to allow the integration of Arts are not new or something that doesn't generally take place in schools anyway. The problem isn't that students aren't performing plays, making music or creating artworks, which to a certain extent they are, but that they are approaching all of it in the same manner as they would any other subject. Art Integration isn't just about setting a separate time and place for students to do Art, which is important in itself, but to imbibe the principles of Art to other subjects as well - emphasis on why things happened as opposed to simply what happened, making learning interactive rather than one directional, encouraging students to do their own research and question established practices etc.

Here’s why arts integration is critical The approach provides an opportunity to bring back creativity and increase student achievement at the same time.Sound impossible? It’s not. For schools that commit to using arts integration with integrity, the results are astounding. Schools that intentionally use arts integration find student achievement rises by 10% OR MORE across the board. No longer can we say that creativity, innovation, and meaningful learning cannot exist in schools today. Instead, schools must be brave enough to look beyond traditional approaches (which yield very little result) for approaches like Arts Integration and STEAM that have a proven track record of working. Here’s why: 1. Student Buy-InStudents become active participants in their learning when the arts are intentionally integrated. This in turn, provides an opportunity for students to own the learning and have a vested interest in their own success 2. Builds Critical Thinking Skills Students engage in critical thinking and construct personal meaning through their learning in arts-integrated lessons. They develop the skills to work through problem-solving and to innovate new solutions. This builds grit and perseverance capacities in all learners. 3. Empowerment for Teachers and Students Instructors become facilitators of creative learning and are empowered in their own professional growth. Teachers feel fulfilled and able to provide a hands-on learning environment for their students. 4. Affords EquityYields an equitable learning environment for all learners through their own access points. 5. Provides Connective Learning Furnishes a research-based pathway to teaching 21st century learning skills and natural avenues for differentiation. How to Build Buy-In for Arts Integrated Instruction. When schools or teachers start out on their Arts Integration journey, so many become frustrated that other teachers or school leaders don’t want to jump on the bandwagon. You may be excited. You’re definitely passionate. You’ve got research that says that Arts Integration works. None of that matters if you don’t have buy-in. And not just buy-in from your colleagues: buy-in from parents and most importantly, from students. How to create buy-in? Push vs. Pull. The secret to creating buy-in for Arts Integration always lies within the work that you do. The more diligently that you plug on with what you know works for YOUR students, the better your results will be. Your students will become more confident and excited about what they are doing. You’ll begin to see deeper connections and thought processes. Students will begin to persevere in problem-solving because it’s just too fun not to do the hard work. That’s when others will take notice.Too often, we try and push our passion onto others. We like to move fast – if there is something that we’re doing and it’s working, we want the rest of the world to do it too. But that comes across and pushy and aggressive. It’s as if you’re trying to make your colleagues do something when they don’t even know what it looks like for themselves.People don’t like change. They are afraid of what a new approach might do TO them instead of what it will do FOR them.Instead, go back to your work. Make a difference for each child sitting in each chair every single day. Use the arts integration approach consistently and make small changes to your own classroom over time. This will pull in your students who will begin talking to their parents and their friends about how much they are enjoying your content. And just like a garden, you’re students are going to bloom. That will get their attention and then you’ll start to hear more and more people asking about that “arts integration thing” you’ve been doing all this time. https://educationcloset.com/what-is-arts-integration-in-schools/#whyintegrate

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.”

–Albert Einstein

As a teacher I have often heard parents complain about the primary school child spending endless hours in colouring or drawing pictures and extended playtime is frowned upon especially when exam time is around the corner. Are joyful experiences impediments in the process of learning? 21st century skills can’t be alienated from the joyful learning experiences created through integration of various art forms. Anything enjoyed by the students has the potential to create better understanding and be retained for longer period. The recommendations in the NCF 2005 also state the importance of art in the healthy mental development of students. In India Rabindranath Tagore pioneered the idea of a relationship between art and learning and many of his ideas are captured in the book – ‘Art The Basis Of Education’ by DEVI PRASAD

Pyramids, cathedrals and rockets exist not because of geometry, theories of structures or thermodynamics, but because they were first a picture – literally a vision- in the minds of those who build them.
