I believe that Emily Dickinson uses capitals and hyphens to create a point. For example, Dickinson capitalizes the word 'Dark' and another variant of 'Darkness'. I think this is to bring the point of the poem together. I believe the use of hyphens is also describing phrases from before. An example of this is "And meet the Road - erect -" and "When not a Moon disclose a sign - Or Star -"

The figurative use of light and sight is used as a metaphor for life. This means that when light is taken away, such as when the poem states "When not a Moon disclose a sign - Or Star - come out - within" we are left in confusion and without sight. Confusion is shown when the text states "The Bravest - grope a little - And sometimes hit a Tree". The metaphor from this is used to show that when something new or confusing comes into life, we stumble around blindly until we settle in and realize what is happening. This is seen when Dickinson states "something in the sight Adjusts itself to Midnight - And Life steps almost straight". The Life in this excerpt means us, like how we adjust to confusion and continue moving.

The effect on the tone -

The effect on the tone in paragraph three makes the poem seem melancholy until it slowly shifts from stanzas four and five into a more serious tone. This is seen when in stanza four Dickinson states, "The News would strike me dead -" meaning that even if the speaker were to get their sight back it would cause them to die from being overjoyed.

The meaning of synecdoche is to use a part of something to represent a whole. It is used in this poem when referring to 'the warmth' that the speaker says someone gave and 'the light'. Both of these terms are used to refer to the whole of a person the speaker is trying to forget.

The rhyme scheme of the poem is ABCB DAEA.

The speaker is a woman talking to her heart.

The heart is given the responsibility to forget the comfort that the man gave the speaker. The heart is also told to tell the speaker when it is done forgetting.

The mood of the poem is sentimental.
