Starting a new year at uni is very different being able to be in the building swell seeing the other classes and being able to see how the year will be, it's very surreal almost feels like being a new student, meeting new faces and new tutors is almost startling. Meeting Kate and talking about what we are doing for the year made me more intrigued by the course, we did a brief presentation on what the year can expect and showing us the side courses we can take, we also found out what studio and advisor we would have I found out that I would be in studio 5 and my advisor would be Mark. Later that day we got to see another presentation of all the advisors showing us their work, it was amazing to see how each tutor's style complements them almost making sense by how they talked and behaved, each tutor's work made me think of the possibilities I could do, but made me see that art can be done in different ways.

Studio 5 takeover, new day and very exciting moving into the studio was exciting and different today was the day we where going to being shoeing of our art summer art project making kinda nervous about showing of our skills soo soon to the whole year but our tutor Kevin had a completely different idea he decided to gather our class and talk abit about ourselves he then whoght we could do a group class experiment we got to talking and came up with all sorts of ideas such as fashion show and drawings we take part in but we finally decided to come on the idea of a sculpture and what it could be, the ideas were gathered and agreed we would do the sculpture of a god a new religion and what i could mean to our class and how we all portray him we decided on gathering items around the uni building from the trash and items we brought it was very interesting we gathered our found objects and began building our god placing our objects on the platform that Mark provided and the sculpture began it was fun to make and was a big ice breaker for us all being able to talk to each other, time passed by kinda fast and we all managed to break throught the barrier of being nervous and opened up to talking and making new friends, we got carried away and our mascot god we called Gazza was born and so began our ritual drawings and symbols became spouting out of us all, and they day was nearly over and we had come together as a group and created something amazing, and each studio came and saw what we had down, in the other studio was the students has displayed out their summer project like and exhibition and i was amazing to see each student work. As a surprise, the tours brought snacks and beers to relax us as well and we had a relaxed peaceful rest of the evening making new friends.

Went to Uni for my lecture at 11. In the lecture, we looked at the derived project and what the word meant- Derive, a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiences, When looking at the slides it was showing us that anything can be used looking at various artists and materials was interesting to see one word can be interpreted in different ways and shown visually in different forms. When thinking about what I could do to show what the word meant to me. When leaving the class with my head thinking one to the dozen so I went to grab lunch I went to McDonald's and started to get an idea of something I could do, I started taking photos of objects that I wanted to show, and I began gathering evidence of how I was going to show my project by getting a simple idea. I began jotting ideas of what I could do and see what material I wanted to use, I also was looking at stepping out of my comfort zone with this project and trying new things and see what I could push myself to do, looking at old sketchbooks would help with that taking notes of what I continue to always to and what I can do to change that it was really fun and interesting to do kinda almost evaluating my work.

My idea of the derive project was starting to piece in my head, I had to wait until it was night and darker to take photos when going out I struggled at first with what I could take photos of because I still wasn't one hundred per cent sure and when taking photos I struggled at first of how to balance the light and how to see the items in the phots was another problem. In trial and error, I took a couple of photos and looked a what was I doing wrong and how to turn the settings off on my mobile taking photos the settings were what caused some problems making them almost blurry but some turned out okay and others were far too blurry, I began looking at an artist that worked with night time pieces and one came to mind of Kim Cogan looking at his work of night time paintings with dark tones of buildings of places normally not considered seen as a beauty it was interesting to look at his work to see what could I could take from it, I looked at what I could do I started sketching out the photos I took to see what I could grasp in my head an idea. Doing quick sketches was normally what I do to help open up my mind and see if it can spark ideas as well, they sometimes are only even simple little ones and are not visually pleasing to other people.

Looking at my Drawings and photos I decided to go with the idea of drawing "Night signs at McDonald's" I looked at the images I took and thought of doing how McDonald's and putting them in small details in all my paintings. I looked back on my photos and decided to go out during the day and get more photos to get the physical objects a bit clearer but mix them into the dark photos with the background so that I can see both the night and daytime differences I went and did the same walk I did last time follow the same steps but unlike last, I look some new photos of items I thought could be an interesting story to tell, when taking these daytime photos I never had the same difficulty of last time with my iPhone during on settings and changing the outcome of the photo it was easier and quicker, they came out much sharper and I preferred them to the night photos but still wanted to go with them of paying night time. When looking at how I could work with the light photos changing them to dark would be a challenge but it was what I wanted this year its what i set myself up for so I began working with my paint mixing it adding blacks and dark blues almost like a colour palate, and then looking at what materials I could paint on I looked at the different coloured papers for backgrounds to see how that could change the outcome as well I began experimenting and seeing the difference of a simple background could do.

Today we met the Liberian she gave us a brief presentation of what and how to use the library to our advantage it was very interesting and helpful to use, each slideshow talked about how easy it was to use and it was really useful it showed us how to take quotes and how to look up the right information it also showed to not use wiki because it's not always useful but Dawn gave us another site to use which I hadn't heard of until today and it was Google scholar it was an eye opener and I began to use it as a wee mock it was pretty easy and was definitely one to keep a record of, when dawn was showing us how the library can be used she showed us how simple it can be to get the book it was really helpful and made want to use this year, as to last we never really got an explanation on how to use it, or how it can be seen to advantage. When looking at the library for myself I managed to look at a couple of books I could use for the semester. Kate then gave us a slideshow on how to create a reflective journal how to develop it hoe to document it and it was definitely a helping hand as I normally don't like writing sometimes I am better talking about my work but it would definitely help by taking notes of my with it means that I could be able to look back at my notes and stuff I wanted to change. I kinda also see this as maybe a challenge for myself as I always badly critique my work all time so trying to stay away from using the term is shit and I'm just going to restart it might be a challenge.

Today was our later lecture about what motivates you as an artist and it made me think what truly motivates me to do my artwork is probably that I love being expressive and playing with paint, another thing that helps me create art is not being completely silent there is something about a room being quite doesn't help me concentrate when painting or experimenting I need at least background music whether that be music, a Tv show or in my case a crazy little brother is my helping hand in creating art, looking at some artist and how their methods might differ but growing up in a loud home kind always helped me create my work and I never knew how or why. When moving to Dundee at first last year I was in a bit of a pickle of how to get my creative side out again because it was completely silent and it was lockdown it was a struggle but I came out of that and decided to buy a speaker and listening to different genres of music. It still was a struggle but I managed to get my flare back again, with the nightly calls from my younger brother while he rambles away about whatever game he plays were my motivation even though its a weird inspiration it was mine, and it was as helped so while working through this course I had my helping hand of my little brother, when listening to him he showed us how some artist Such as Andy Warhol music list of when he painted in the factory it kinda gave the how his atmosphere of how he felt when doing those paintings, and this showed us that maybe these songs are how he expressed his emotion when painting to the rhythm of music It almost kinda made sense looking at the list of music and looking at the work its self, almost made it feel like the jigsaw puzzle pieces fit exactly right and going from Andy Warhol being one of my Favourite artists almost kinda made me see himself a bit clearer and step in his shoes. When listening to the lecture and coming away from it times I do wonder what does truly inspire me in some of my art pieces or work I have done previously and have actually never really figured out what it was and to be honest, I probably will never know because, to be honest, my ideas are like the lightbulb the almost as if switch themselves on and can be something I wake up to and witch almost throughout of foot when having to the right where and what gave me the inspiration and almost is my downfall of having to make so stupid excuse up about what it is that inspires me, can it be just as simple as saying luck and possibly my weird brain.

I had an early shift at work today and was able to work on my project I started off with an A3 Piece of paper and began my sketch of the bustop and the clown I wanted my project to have kind of like a weird joke to it of ronald mcdonald going home from work it was a bit of struggle and not like anything I did before as I tend to saty away from drawing figures and on top oof that it was all darkened down with the nightime theme I was very stumped and nervos at first of puting ny =baintbrush to paer but I stepped over that line and began my paining at first I hated but I began to ejoy my idea I added the street the clown and the light it was new to me the design but it was something I knew I enjoyed doing, I pu the paintin aside because I always have that effect of overdoing stuff so I knew sitting it to thes side and asking kevin as to what could be done to fix or enhance it because looking at it I knew it was missing something still but I didnt know what it was yet. When starting my other painting I did the lights and showed a bit more detail and each painting I did was more of a giant leap out of my comfort zone made me feel a bit more confident I could do it, I was very happy with my outcomes but still thought they were missing something.

Today was studio day and was the day we got assigned a time with our advisors, about looking at our derive project it was nerve-wracking, to say the least but I was excited and prepared to ask questions on what I could do to fix my paintings or to say what was missing when going to the studio took everything I need for the day, when arriving at the studio I was a bit flabbergasted at how everyone had moved in making it there home the room was no longer a for the white-walled room it was colourful and bright with all the pictures and painting of peoples work it was interesting when waitingon my meetingkinda got nervous looking at some others people work and already in my head thinking that mines wasn'tgood enoughand did I don enough I pushed the thoughts aside and kept saying just be positive but being stuckin your head can be my downfall when it comes to art I began looking over my stuff and startedto draw some more sketches trying to look atphotos and giving quick responses on whitepaper i normally only stick to white paper and B pencils but i tried to add a bit of flare drawing with coloured pencils rend and blue but ended up hating the idea but also liked the almost 3D look, My Time came to speaking with Kevin andtalking about my project of the journey home from Mcdonalds he was able to give me a few ideas such as looking at artist -
Tom Wood, Book
Ron English
Brett Amory
As they all have the nighttime theme we spook about how I have managed to get my composition perfected and my placement is down to a tea but even though he agreed my painting lacked the bright light effect, I bullet pointed out what he had said as
- Fix paintings highlights
-try one stroke paintbrush methods
-clean the paintings up and make them sharper
-keep the humour
I took all the notes and began to consider them I wanted to fix my paintings and make that missing thing they need to be gone.

I took in what the lecture said about what can help emotion been shown in your work through music so I came up with idea of listening to 2 different playlist of music to see what would happen to my work My first playlist was music i liked and would always listen to and my other was unfortunately the yop charts which was music that i hated and nevr listened to and i put this theory to the test today in the studio i had done a couple of paintings but had to cut my studio time short as i had the cold and had needed to go home and wrap up warm, i took a quick nap and was up and ready to fo the task at hand i wanted to do today My first playlist was of music i liked and timed my self an hour of painting to see how much work i had got done and had noticed i managed to complet a few pieces getting lost in the rythm singing along and focusing in on what i was doing that when the timer went off i hadnt even realised that time haf went by so fast, i then repeated my task with the top charts and found myself being distracted and not doing the work and constantly changing the song and almost as if the paining was a chore i at for ages trying to get stuff done but just couldnt help myself wondering of and not attempting to do this challenge anymore time went by almost longer and really put me in a shit mood and copleting forgeting the task at hand and i began switching the music of and watching a tv show and when the timer went i completely forgot at what is had done. Front the music i like to the music i hated was avery different out come the music i hated i had barely half assed 3 painting but the music i like i had done 4 very well paintings and even fixed my mistakes of my old paintings.

When listening to the manifestos provided by the tutor on the BBC I never really connected the same as the video of visual ones I almost struggled to engage with them same I did find them interesting but I can admit I am a visual learner I need to see something and not imagine, I thought they were important to listen to and get that view of it as well. My favourite recording out of them all was “Seize the Future” Some points the made where very valid like the bit where he said “when someone mentions a Manifesto we all get alarmed and it seems revolutionary” it almost true it kinda makes me feel like that, I'm almost scared of the word myself, kinda avoiding the whole making one myself seems very stupid. When looking at what I can take from these and from the previous video I looked at how I could do my own response to mine by writing one as im more likely to produce one.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b09013tg

When reading the two different Manifestos they Kinda confused me at first with the weird way they are presented but I liked how they are explained and described, they show the person that wrote them really understood what they were putting across it was interesting to read someone else thoughts of the manifesto and not hear them speak, it was hard to fully see how the tone was in the language as to the spoken ones where you hear how their mannerisms are, the written when looking what I did to the ones I read mines more short and sweet and inspirational theirs give depth and explanation I will be definitely carrying this technique on and practising doing more understanding what the word means and what I can do more to it, this was not something I could learn in a couple of weeks I want to try master writing it and want to then try to make one for each type such as video and voice recording, to step out my comfort and understand how the other artists fell when they do them.

After my lecture, I went about taking more photos getting into the nightlife habit and looking at things typically not seen as art it was fun got a couple of stares but never less fun I was nervous at first but began getting into the habit of it it took me a wee trail off takin pics of odd things, each photo turned out to have a different effect I liked how some looked with the blurry haze over them, each photo I took was shot on my iPhone camera and some look professional and some just a bit there. adding to my story as in Ronald's journey home was all about signs and looking through his eyes almost even though I know he's not real but just could be the story, when walking down the road I kept picking out stuff maybe that I have never seen before as art but something a story could be told it was fun and different and not something I've done before.

Front the music I like to the music I hated was very different outcomes the music I hated I had barely half-assed 3 paintings but for the music, I liked I did 4 very well paintings and even fixed the mistakes in my old paintings.

I was unable to attend my lecture as I had fractured my thumb and was at Hospital that day but I had time to think about what I wanted to do I was getting visitors coming to see me since I hurt my thumb and that would be non-other than my mum and my little brother, I started to panic because I then found out I dislocated my right-hand thumb ( which was my hand I draw and write with) and my left thumb I just staved all because I tried to put the clothes horse away and fell over it with my thumbs in which sounds stupid but believe me it hurt, I began to panic thinking I wouldn't be able to to work or draw but the nurse said it can be a speedy recovery if I just stress less and got my cast and was told to come back in a week about what can be done.

Today was the weekly Thursday zoom call was always a favourite day of mine a very chilled afternoon today because I was unable to draw and my family came to visit I decided to show them Dundee art hotspots we checked out a couple, hopefully, to even inspire me and not panic me too much on my current situations, when looking at the V&A and the art museums Dundee has to offer I was very interested in some displays each exhibition had a different experience to offer and I enjoyed getting to see all the artwork I had seen, even some artists pieces I had seen before at other exhibitions where there and I pleasantly surprised to have seen them again even though I know th9s was not what my current research was about it was an interesting day and to see the work was eye-opening and was one for me to relax and think that maybe I can do this still with a stupid broken thumb :)

Brett Amoy and Kim Cogan-
When Mark suggested these two artists look and how they do their work was something I never thought of comparing my work to an artist's because mine was of just signs and objects rather than buildings, when looking at both artist work I could see the similarities both artists shared and differ when looking at what I could pick up for each artist and not completely copy I looked first at how Brett Amoy did his work I studied a painting called 'Run', the painting was very eye-catching and felt almost photo like, this painting was part of a 10 year series of paintings called WAITING-paintings that touch upon the urban dweller's quiet and often unnoticed hunger for "place" in environments that are generally indifferent to such aspirations of the soul. The pieces have a meditative quality and a muted sense of pathos.
these paintings kind of opened up my related to my idea of painting objects not seen as art with the signs and objects in the street, he has a more serious background topic of the topic "unnoticed hunger" mine has the theme of the well-known brand of Mcdonalds and the CLown making his journey home.
I then looked at Kim Cogan's painting 'Stairway" his realistic painting of the stairs at night in the city was one of his paintings that really caught my eye of something so simple as stairs can be seen and painted to be an art piece was something I wanted to do with the idea, same with how Amory with his buildings Cogan made his a bit warmer toned he never had that cold feeling about it he uses more browns and yellows, which experimented with in my sketchbook with tones and paper when looking at both artist painting I wanted to use both colours theory of the warmth and the cold and make simple paintings a bit more fun.

My recovery fro taking my cast of to having a sport bandage on i had to try get back to getting to draw and paint at first it was a struggle and my outcomes where not that good i took trial and error, each painting took time and patience, i prepared back grounds with dark blue washs i then took time by painting in each detail from signs and objects, finding a new way to hold a brush was hard when starting i blocked in the dark colour and blended in while the paint was wet and tried to make it less brush mark looks and make it seamless, while doing this i used a dinner paint brush and blended the paint for the more photo look, i struggled to get this technique down as im used to not really doing my paintings like this, with each one i did made it a bit harder, but it was pushing my likits with trial and error came a new method of making the artworks smaller rather than doing large pieces like A4 or A3 i kept the Scale to A5 or small srap of paper helped me focus more and keep the detail a bit sharper and better.

I looked at there artist Tom Wood photography book of "All Zones of Peak" and loved his way of how his photos are shown they are just random photos of stuff we see every day it kind of inspired me how they looked and made me think my photos where as if updated versions. The book has photos of mostly public transport in his are and the photos have an almost old look to them kind of reminding me of a disposable camera. The images that stood out to me most was on page 11 and 14 I wanted to try recreate them they were really eye catching and took and interest in me.
https://tomwoodarchive.com/books/all-zones-off-peak#slides

When listening to the artist's manifesto was something new for me I had actually never heard of it before and was really interested in the different types of artist's ways of doing it, each one dove a little deeper into each artist's manifesto and made me want to learn more about them I ended up going on to youtube and looking at more and almost going onto a spiral of watching and listening to them, it was interesting watching how each artist was inspired by these words and actions. When thinking about how to do my own I wasn't sure I wanted to show mine through video or recording as I was ready to jump over my comfort zone I just wanted to keep mine simple and short and decided just write mine down.

With experimenting with the papers and colours I wanted to work with the actual packaging of the food with using it as the background of my pieces I used the paper from receipts a burger box and paper from the burger too, when painting over one of them it at first draft didn't work out as well as the grease from the food made the paint ontop not dry it was smudging and was making the paper weak and ripping so I tried again with just pen studies if continuous line work and it managed to work better, these design where much cooler and gave off a found look, about the lost art in trash. Almost like directions to some place on found paper it was different from what I normally use which is store-bought surfaces and was fun to mess about with. I just kept the colours simple with the black and red biro pen marks to not add too much distraction or make it blurry, the drawings on my receipts are probably one of my favourites I see this as another final outcome of my comic-like story I had fun doing this test and found out that even the paper of McDonald's can be reused for something dipole as art.

When finishing and sticking my artwork in my sketchbook, placing each drawing in my book i looked at putting in sketches of the composition and placement annotation it and taking notes of what i could do better, continuing it own i did the same with my paintings adding in things needed and taking stuff that was less important to other things, in my painting pages i annotated a bit harsher to myself but came a bit easier biking out the strengths and weaknesses and making sure i can carry what i needed and dropped what i didnt, looking at my work i looked at the progress and was very happy of how far i came with my work stepping out my comfort zone and branching out to new leafs using the darker colours was very new and scared but can confidently say i will no longer see that as an issue, while looking through my sketchbook i wish i had more time to make my new idea of like acomic like book with little annoataed pictures of the “Night signs at Mcdonalds” While looking at my work i think i could make a comedy comic roll with paintings and drawings from painting of journeys to signs of the way, after finishing this semester 1 i will carry on with the project and do in spare time to see my final outcome i wish i was able to share that project as a final piece, but im still happy with my outcome.

‘Night Signs At Mcdonald’s’

My project is about a nighttime journey, an idea I got from going on my walk from my previous examples of derive, I looked at my photos and came up with the weird theme of Ronald Mcdonald's journey home at night as if he finished a shift, at work, I looked at signs on the journey home from the closest McDonalds to me and logged signs and items with photos I could paint. When coming along with that idea I looked at also subjects I could paint that is not normally seen as art and are normally forgotten about to the naked eye when walking that was things such as bins, lamps and signposts.

While doing this subject I want to step out of my comfort zone and do something new and change my constant same pattern of doing bright-in-your-face pieces to dull and dark paintings, looking at what I could do with my project I came to the theme of the journey of going home from work and making some painting with the main them of Mcdonalds in theme but also adding it subtly to my painting like simple markings, or not even at all just giving the idea that the brand Mcdonalds there, chosen Mcdonalds was an odd theme for me as I type for a simple design and avoid drawing anything too difficult for myself, that when do this task im setting out goals of achieving such as:

Making it look realistic

Keep a sense of humour in the paintings

And experiment with material

By the end of this project I hope to have at least a piece I could consider a final, that can show what I was trying to achieve as a story, this will probably be the outcome of a three-piece painting instead of one but I hope that it shows a journey at night with signs from Mcdonalds.
