Waves which pass through a material at a wave speed which depends on the elastic and inertial properties of the object or material. There are two types of Mechanical Waves: longitudinal and transverse waves. A longitudinal wave is a wave vibrating in the direction of propagation. A transverse wave is a wave vibrating at right angles to the direction of its propagation.

One type of wave is a surface wave. A surface wave is a mechanical wave that moves when something hits the water. A surface wave can also be a seismic wave such as a Rayleigh. Another type of wave is a sound wave. A sound wave is another type of mechanical wave and its a wave of compression and rarefaction, by which sound can go through air or any material that allows these types of waves to pass through.
