Four days after a school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, five students who survived the massacre created the “March for Our Lives” movement. The movement occurred in Washington DC, where thousands of students walked out of their classes for 17 minutes of silence. The goal for the movement was to help prevent gun violence and to tell society that every school shooting that occurs matter.

In the United States, it is legal to carry a handgun in public in all 50 states. But the majority of the states require a person to have a permit to carry a loaded handgun in public. A school shooting occurs every month, killing innocent people at random. There is a brief period of mourning, democrats offer feeble pleas for gun permits, and republicans offer their “thoughts and prayers.” But no substantial laws are passed, and the nation moves on without thought of what happened. People that die are not just a number. But school shootings are still occurring, and it is like nothing in society has changed. A school shooting will be a top headline for a few days, people with mourn, and then a few days later, its forgotten.
