Being a researcher and working in a global team has its own perks and disadvantages.

Talking about specific advantages of working in global teams includes learning of different ideas, and aspects of solving a problem for the success of a project. For example, you can work in collaboration with each other on a global problem doing research on malaria and study the experience of researchers from different regions for the eradication of the disease. Fun side of working in the team includes learning interesting facts about the cultures of others and making new friends and cherish that experience for whole life.

Importantly, the success of a global team depends on good leadership where the team leader must lead with empathy. The members irrespective of their cultural background must be motivated to work with comfort and should be treated without bias by the teammates and the leader. The leader of the global team should possess the qualities of being a quality listener and have the tendency to adjust as per the requirement of the team members from different cultural backgrounds to succeed as a team.

While working in global teams I feel following subjects should be given in account by all the members for the success and work-life harmony:

1. Misunderstandings, opportunities, and appreciations: People from different ethnic backgrounds are not being educated and given living opportunities the same way as received by the people from mostly the developed nations.

As mentioned by Erin in her video the people from Malaysia are being considered as shy, not expressive, and not contributing much to the meetings by Americans. But on the other hand, the Malaysians think American being too talkative, interrupting others talking and not letting other people to speak.

This is the same what I felt at my workplace, the Americans and Britishers does not stop talking and provide any chance to the other members of the team from China, India, and Thailand to speak. The other members must chase for their turn to speak and when they speak, they speak very intelligently in a short and concise manner instead of telling big irrelevant stories. Irrespective of whatever they speak they are not truly appreciated by the peers and sometimes thought that they are not extrovert.

My learning has taught me to let other person finish first and then convey your thoughts. Unfortunately, in most of the American workplaces this is not considered as acceptable. This ultimately results into the buildup of extra pressure for non-native members to change themselves and learn American culture.

The person gets hired in the team because that person must have stand out from the others. Now, it is the responsibility of both the team and the member to speak out and learn to acclimatize as per the requirement and at the same time making others to realize about his/her expectations from the team (be direct). Explain, and teach them about your culture and differences about the workplace environment form the country they belong. In this manner, others will know how they can adjust there talking times so that others can get chance to speak up during meetings and express their thoughts.

2. Respect to each other’s culture and beliefs: At my workplace some do respect and take into consideration each other’s culture and religion while others don’t even give a thought about that. This has happened with me at some occasions but on the other hand because of my dietary restrictions I have been always given full consideration and respect to my beliefs and practices by my mentor and other team members which I really cherish.

I just had the opportunity to work with people from the USA, and two Middle East colleagues. In my experience I have a very nice level of communication with my colleagues but I noticed a lot of similarities with my country and Middle East, however I have to be very careful and respectful with our cultural differences, specially with religion. I like to listen and learn the best of them.
Some of my colleagues from the US want to know more about me and share ideas in a very respectful way but some others don't accept easy a different ideas coming from someone foreigner :(. In general they are very structured, organized and concise, some of them like to share about themselves , others avoid talking of personal details.

It could be very useful to create integration dynamics as an ice breaker. Those are very effective in terms of communication and help very much to get to know the people you are working with and for the managers to understand how they can refer to each person of the team for example I always share my culture bringing traditional food on a Mexican holiday, I believe they like when I do it and enjoy sharing very much, since I do that I noticed everybody (even the US colleagues) get to know better and works as a very nice ice breaker :).

As Erin said I think that everybody has to be prepare how to deal with the cultural differences in a work environment, otherwise the barriers of communication can be seriously affected caused by a misconception that can be avoided by preparing everybody to understand each other.

I believe that both teams can have a great potential if they find good communication strategies and keep in mind to be always open to feedback and focus on the same objective. But the global teams with a good direction and a good understanding has a greater potential because when you combined the best of each culture you will always have better results.

I have worked with a diverse team having people from China, India, Spain and Nicaragua. Though most of them are in the United States since their childhood but I think people are tied to their culture and could reflect a part of it during their day-to-day life. Being in research, my experience working with them was wonderful. During our meetings we were so open to the discussion and we also had an understanding of the culture differences.

I think people these days are more open to learn new things about other cultures. I didn’t have a habit of interrupting people while they are discussing during the meeting. But later, I found it as an interactive way of a discussion which could help in accelerating thought process.

Managers should first understand and respect the culture of others. Further, managers can construct a team who along with their expertise should respect and perceive the culture differences.

Nonetheless, we do and will have cultural differences, we should give time to all the teams to share their ideas and should ask their suggestions before finalizing anything. If we do provide specific time slots along with general discussion during meeting that will help people to bring out their ideas.

The world is changing and so do the needs. In this world, we are manufacturing or developing products for everyone. Compared to global team, a classic and monocultural team has a tight niche and scope of its expansion is limited. A monocultural team won’t be able to understand the demands of a culture to whom they don’t understand. Even a company won’t develop medicine or therapeutics for a single race. We need to collaborate with teams around the globe to understand the science and develop solutions. - Archit

I had worked with people from difference cultural backgrounds in Europe, Middle East, Asia and the United States. I couldn't forget the first time I met a person from other culture. It was just after I graduated so I was so nervous and no idea at all. This was because that is not just personal relationships but a business matters. That ambigutiy made me more cautious and uptight. As time over, I got to catch each characteristic and realized that it is more matter of persons not cultures. My culture, South Korean, is generally perceived polite, indirect and quite and focusing on harmony. It has showed in 2002 World Cup where millions of people were waring red shirts leaded by Red Devils fans brought together at the city hall square for the street cheering. We had 35 year conlonial period and then 3 year Korean War. We are well-known of the miracle of the Han-river. That's why Koreans consider harmony and unite as a main value nationwide.

Managers should learn the cultural diversity through history to understand people in various backgrounds. And open-mindness is important. If you are ready to listen and be open-minded, the meeting with all team members would work well. People who live in hot area do not know about people and life style in cold regions on Earth. People who has only one child do not have idea about big family way. Global team have much more view and opinion than a classic, monocultural team.

I have worked with people in are countries in the Americas (North, Central and South America). All cultures are different, even though, all of are Americans.

I have been the opportunity to coordinate projects and also participate of projects coordinated by colleague from other countries in Americas. In this sense, I have had the opportunity to both sides of the coins.

My experience working with people from other cultures has been very rewarding because I have obtained more benefits than disadvantages.

In my opinion, my culture (Latinoamerica people) is perceived by others as impractical people, and I agree with the perceptions because I recognize that we have to be more straight forward in our work style. But on the other hand, there are a reality in our countries, and this is that our institutions are very bureaucratic, and this is one of the most important reason -in my opinion - for which in many time our style could not be more practical.

I think that a Lider or manager should be open to received comments about their college´s points of view, and the most important thing is that they perceived this in order to they feel free to share them.

Finally, I think that the global team leaders should be focused on the positive things of each culture or country in order they can maximize the potential of the team in the project.

I have worked with people from Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico, India and Americans. My experience working with people from different cultural backgrounds has been quite good. I have learned not just about their work stile, also about their cultures. The most important thing for me, it was always respect other’s opinions, thoughts and beliefs . Fortunately, in the meetings we always let the others talk without interruptions which helped us to move forward.

So far, I have heard good things about my culture. We are not seen as a lazy people at least hehehe.

I think managers, who leads a global team need to be aware about the cultural background of the people who are in their teams which it can help them in how to lead the group and prepare the meetings. In the way to prevent the problem that Erin talked about in the video, when the Malaysian couldn’t talk in the meeting.

A good leader should be able to manage a meeting letting all the teams member to share their ideas and thoughts. For this, it’s important to give the space to each person to talk.

In my opinion, a global team has more potencial because each culture has their own way of how to do things, and different point of view and perspective always are going to give value to a company.

I've been a student till now. but I've worked at my university as an event manager where I've been working with people from other countries, and this situation could be challenging as I had to communicate with everyone and had to assign their tasks, but for me has been a great experience, I would say I've learned a lot and we should always be open to accepting others as they are and no matter what nationality they have. this perceptive can make it so easy to work with everyone from different culture. what I believe is you get what you are giving. If you respect everyone with open heart, they will give you the same. I always get that respect from my colleagues, friends and family. so for me to deal with people from different culture is not a big task. also we should let our team member speak! no matter how long they take to explain what they are trying to say or what their idea is, because if they won't speak that ideas will never come out!! and we might lose better idea that person had. At the end, everyone's voice matters! this should be a basic discipline in ourself. and always be nice to everyone.
