Dream girls is a musical with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. Based on the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes , The Shirelles, and others, the musical follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago called "The Dreams", who become music superstars.

The musical follows a majority of black cast as it was a story of the troubles and hardship to try to become successful in the musical world in the 1960s, a time shrouded by negativity towards other races, songs such as "stepping to the bad side" give the audience a chance to see into their lives and how they would of had to do dodgy things to attempt to become even vaguely recognised in such a negative era.

SOCIAL AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Rhythm and Blues was created by Black musicians. After World War II, southern Blacks were in search of better economic and educational opportunities. They also wanted to escape the racial oppression and inequalities created by the Jim Crow laws. Several southern Blacks moved to northern and western cities. Even though the Black communities were isolated, they created a “vibrant entertainment district in every major city”.. New musical styles were introduced to white performers. Rhythm and Blues was created as a way of Blacks to be creative and express their emotions. They could be musicians that were just as talented as whites and they were not afraid the show it.
Also during the midst of the 60s and 70s the black power movement struck up and helped highlight talented musicians with the help of black and white people exactly the same way as jazz from new Orleans.

Oxygen reaches your muscles more efficiently this enhances muscle contraction. It can prevent muscle soreness after your dance practice or physical activity. Warm up is designed to prevent the risk of injury and also prepares the mind and body to concentrate on the task ahead. It also improves our stamina and cardio fitness. Second : Body Conditioning Burpies: jumping , dropping into a plank (x4) Mountain climbers(x4)PliéNeutral then bend and stretch(x4)First position then bend and stretch(x4)Second position then bend and stretch (x4) Body conditioning allows flexibility and stegnth to occur more efficiently , it gives us good arm strength which will allow us to work of our strong Dynamics. Third Plank and Roll across floor to four countsFourthYoga Stretching out making your back straight , then slowly working down to your toes , placing your hands on the floor then working into a lunge and swinging left from right in a lunge. This cool down enables our body to adjust to the warm up and body conditioning activity , it enables us as a group to stretch and improve flexibly and strength.

After our warm up, we were allocated pairs for our duologues assessment.
We were asked to read the duologue and make a list of the 'Given Circumstances'.
We were then given a handout called '10 Ingredients for a Successful Scene' which is what we should use to help stage the scene for this part of Skills Toolkit.

We then in pairs read our scripts (each individually) and had a discussion in our partners for the best course of action, Kirk and I decided we should read through and start to try and establish our characters, following the list that Mr Mawdesley gave us. We successfully established our characters reasons for being where they where at that moment in time and incorporated that into the planning of our scene. We then where instructed to mark down the "key moments" in our script to allow us to build a Skelton and slowly start to construct the foundations of a successful duologue.
Finally, after we had noted our key moments, we dicided to improvise around the key moments to see what would naturally happen to the characters we where playing. I tried my hardest to put myself into the characters shoes and truly try to feel how he would feel in the same exact situation in order to be able to gain an emotional and impactful ability to present the character.

During our lessons we have attempted many techniques during warmup and cool downs that can easily be done wrong and lead to injury is stressed in wrong positions, on the other hand if these techniques are done correctly they can aid our body alignment, flexibility and even sometimes cardio through their difficulty, for example the "balletment tendu" which is its full name is crucial in helping our bodies to stretch and warm up, (it literally means stretch) its also a key component in dance and without it it would be like a missing puzzle piece.
Now during our lesson we where tasked with developing research for the skills and moment we have looked at how they help us with the task of the "dream girls" dance.

The tendu for example.. you would learn the moment wherever you go to dance, showing the importance of structure and meaning of the moment, the moment helps us in our precision and accuracy of the moments that we do, weather it be a slide or a pose it trains our bodies to flex and stretch and be precise in whatever we do. this will aid our performance in dream girls through the execution of the moments we learn making our bodies look more conditioned and polished and therefore looking better for the audience, so much from a little stretch.

we started off our dance lesson with the warm up section, following the same routine we have been doing every week involving bur pees and plank, warming up our bodies and stretching our muscles to avoid injury, we then where told to remember our previous routine from last weeks lesson in order to be able to start to work on new movements being added into the dance. we also worked on our Plie and Tendus which work on our body alignment and once again stretch our our muscles to aid in the dance. After that we then started to work on routine, giving as much energy as possible and remembering to stay in a strong neutral position. we also polished all other previous movements we had learned including the clicks and claps working on the timing, for example after we all gather to watch Indianas groups dance section we worked and rehearsed the timing of the claps so it wouldn't sound sloppy,
Another thing we did was add a another small routine into Lucia and Kirk and myself small dance break, we added another eight counts in order to allow time for the others who are stood in strong positions during the break, to get into centre stage to continue the dance routine, the next section was a completely new one. after the added eight counts we rehearsed a "dabbing" motion into a straight armed gesture. one of my targets is to learn this movement more fluidly and add more character to it in order to make the dance scene "pop" more.
We also had to rehearse travel into the group bundle i mentioned earlier, we realised we didn't add enough character into the travel as we should have, and therefore it looked plain and rushed , so we spiced it up with more energy and pzazz as should have been expected from the dream girls play.

However....I am a first year level 3 student so i used my initiative and thought with Kirk as to what we could do in the first hour and a half of the lesson that we had on that day.
We settled on attempting to go into deeper analysis of the script and simply rehearse it as that is the only way of learning things, taking into consideration the rules that Darren himself swears by, which is linked into the active analysis section of this padlet... However before we did rehearse we thought back to Stanislavski and thought further about objectives and reasons for the characters being where they are, we also went further and thought about the emotions that the character would be feeling during the time of that moment in order to really attempt to try to bring it to life. for example at the line "I still love you" would Phillip be infatuated, fed up, annoyed or anything else.. and why?

we then as I previously stated rehearsed through the script with these emotions in mind, occasionally leaving the classroom silent in ore of our passion for the words on the paper.

We also gave ourselves targets at the beginning of the lesson on post-it notes, these helped us remember what we nee to, for example poise , confidence and attitude.. all traits of our character who we will be reflecting from the situation they are in.

Once again, we started off the three hour session with some stretching exorcises, loosening up our bodies for the hard session coming our way, breaking through the barrier of laziness we often get overtaken by. We then moved in out "dance buddies", im with Lucia. in our partners we once again practised our tendus, from memory and visually rehearsing with footage from previous days i remembered the routine, the routine once again aiding our flexibility and alignment.. one other thing is balance. although its not so predominant we are still on one foot helping our balance with every movement.

we then got into our starting positions and ran through the piece looking for moments we could try to polish up, for example the moment of pushing down is a great case where the tendus came in greatly helpful. we extended out our toes as much as possible and it helps the whole energy of the dance come to life.

we also attempted a mimic of a dance audition so Helen named it , we very quickly attempted to learn a dance routine on full gas, quickly and thoroughly, remembering details as much as possible with the aim of being one of the best at such a hasty routine and therefore being chosen to perform it as a final section of the dance, that exorcise was a great example of how our warm ups help us and lead a huge role for the rest of the lesson, warming up not only our hearts and muscles through increased heart rates but also mentally, through exorcise and routine... getting our brains into a flow of moment.

in this weeks lesson we achieved a lot of work, some polishing and some creating new and even more technical and good looking routines.

we stared off with our warm ups and stretches exactly the same as last week, we then moved onto the routine at hand. lots of polishing and revising critically assessing our performing and dance techniques and even including traits from drama , our characters for example... we payed a lot of attention to the history of our character, how to they feel doing this dance? why are they doing it? are they better than the others but being misunderstood? we assessed how all these traits would affect somebody doing this dance and performed it in the way we would feel.

we also added a move from the dance into our warm up, this move was easily muddled up and we there wanted to practise it more. After we spent time doing this in our warm up we realised that instantly the execution of the steps became more instinctive and fluid therefore adding to the visual pleasure of the final piece.

Towards the end of the routine we also added a large chunk of the dance. one reason for this is because we obviously need an ending, in this ending we payed close attention the the dance skin set.. personally I chose to focus on the precision and detail while performing the routine while also remembering the reasons of my character, especially while holding poses. these poses are a window into how we think our character would be, cocky confident and proud. showing the audience how we feel about the dance confident in our ability.

This session was also a chance to show off our costume that we developed for our character.
mine consisted of a shirt, a tie and a waistcoat closely following the dress of the actors in the west end show, the session allowed up to see if we could move freely during the dance and not completely restrict our moment.

I gave myself character traits that I thought my character would want to reflect during their dance routine after going through what they have. In my routine I wanted to show Attitude, Poise, and confidence. I also remembered my past targets of not wanting to waste anytime at all, and making sure to purely concentrate on the dance itself at the points I did not remember so well. I did all these things reflecting back to my padlet when needed in order to get rediscover where I had previous trouble.
