French Revolution

The french revolution was a major shift not only in societal ways but in how and who would run the french government. It all started from the peoples of france disgust with the way the aristocracy was extremely greedy and only really cared about the upper crust of the french society, alongside King Louis XIV extravagant spending of the money causing france to fall in debt. Although it devolved into a bloodbath descending into the reign of terror after the execution of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XIV, it had started from good natured thought about the people wanting fair and just treatment by the french royals. A pivotal point was the raid on Bastille in order to gather supplies and guns for fear a coup from the military would soon be imposed as a result of the uprisings. "The wave of revolutionary fervor and widespread hysteria quickly swept the entire country. Revolting against years of exploitation, peasants looted and burned the homes of tax collectors, landlords and the aristocratic elite." As both royals and parisians alike both lived in fear of what the opposing side had planned next this took a radical turn when a group of insurgents led by Jacobins stormed the royal residence and arrested the king. The french would see changes after the french revolution that are still implemented today when it comes to leaders and the laws in place to benefit all citizens not just the elites. This can relate similarly to the civil war and when the americans broke free of british rule for similar reasons, i was familiar already with the topic of the french revolution mainly from the famous Marie Antoinette line "Let them eat cake" as a main proponent of the revolution and what ultimately led to her demise.

Moroccan food

Moroccan food is almost a melting pot of different cultures recipes wrapped all into one. Specifically taking inspiration from Berber, Jewish, Arab, and French cultures. Looking through this website about the different dishes they prepare and serve it seems they focus on mainly a meat whether fish, lamb or beef with a sauce and cous cous typically. The original origin of moroccan cuisine comes from south african descent and assimilated through different cultures to make it what it is today. The french adapted the meat preserving technique from the berbers and used ingredients readily available to them geographically. Morocco being in the center of many different cultures on the map and close historical relationships could have potentially resulted in the passing and or merging of different cultural foods based on necessity, through wedlock or just what was available at the time. The iconic signature dish is the tangine which consists of a round clay dish with a cone shaped lid to lock in the heat and flavors soaked overnight in water the clay is then placed on hot coals with meats and vegetables braising inside until tender.

Haiti is a rich diverse nation that has 4 national flags and was the first post-colonial independent black led nation in the world. They popularized many different foods and practices we see trickled into culture in america such as their food with french influence and a heavy emphasis on starch The French influences in Haiti are present in their cuisine, but more so it is representative of their location. They do however have their own flavor as a result of the lack of Spanish influence on their island compared to others The cooking style used in Haiti is predominately Creole and includes heavy use of pepper in the majority of their dishes. Haiti is a huge textile country and giving more focus towards color and gradually making a name for itself in the fashion industry for its creativity, diversity and sustainability. In Haiti, there is a variety of fashion ranging from the more traditional attire to the day-to-day clothing. The traditional female attire consist of Quadrille (or Karabela) dress. The dresses are made of a material that mainly comes in blue and red, which is usually made from an off-the-shoulder top or bodice with a full matching skirt that has additional ruffles, lace to add color and visual appeal. A head-scarf or turban can also be worn especially in the more rural areas of Haiti for both traditional and day-to-day use. The traditional male attire consists of a wedding shirt made of lightweight fabric and worn untucked with a jacket of any color on top.

Haiti's textile industry and its moniker ‘Made In Haiti’ has been long-established in being a key export for the country which has focused on low-end commodity apparel through the use of its low-wage sweatshops that have sewed for some of the biggest American apparel brands such as American Eagle, DKNY, Ralph Lauren etc. Haiti is also known for the practice of Vodou and or dark magic which is often depicted in many american shows, The Haitian dictator Papa Doc was a strong believer in the country's folklore and used elements of it to guide his brutal rule of the country during the Duvalier Dynasty. They also celebrate carnival and hold lots of festivals.

Sports in Belgium

Sports in Belgium plays a prominent role in the society and culture. Belgium has won 44 gold medals at Summer Olympic Games as well as 2 at Winter Olympic Games for figure skating at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz and speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Belgium has always been a highly athletic and competitive society throughout history and around 13% of the belgium population competes in sports. As a sub-area of culture in Belgium, sport is now considered to fall under the responsibility of the 3 Belgian communities. Their main sports are football, cycling, hockey and tennis. The culture around sports has always had to do with the natural born athleticism they are born with including athletic builds, height and agility. In addition to that Belgium has also been a popular venue for a number of international sports events like the 1920 Olympic Games, 1972 UEFA European Championship and they also co-hosted the 2000 UEFA European Championship with the Netherlands. Belgium also has a very well decorated national football team having taken the 2nd place in the 1980 UEFA European Championship and 4th place in the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Belgium seems to be the mecca of a multitude of different sports which makes them unique because most countries typically capitalize on one or two sports that they are best at but Belgium has a multitude that they are good at.
