Our stimulus this week was a moving image of an old children’s cartoon. For this, we came up with a song on the topic of childhood and how it affects your future and the dreams you have of growing up. The genre we used for this was pop punk, as it gave the impression of both upbeat and the juxtaposition of an angry song, which are the emotions we wanted to bring across overall

In the song’s development, we decided to change the tonality so the song still sounded quite happy and upbeat despite the lyrics being negative. To achieve this, the chords went through a lot of changes. I think this helped improve the song as it made it better to listen to, being happy and stylized if anything as a Paramore song rather than having it sound too distressing.

To incorporate a more uplifting vibe at the start, we also developed the use of the ukulele. In the end, we opened with just the ukulele and then transitioned into the other instruments to give it the more punk feel later on. I think this helped give the song the change in tonality we were looking for by opening on bright, happy chords with darker lyrics and then changing into a heavier texture and having a change of the chords when played on guitar and bass. All in all we used a ukulele, electric guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar and vocals.

The performance

Our performance played out as follows. We opened with the ukulele, where the intro and verse were sung over only the ukulele. Immediately after, we go into the notes of the pre-chorus and build up the texture with the guitar, drums and bass playing. This builds up to the chorus where all the instruments, without the ukulele, are playing a change in the notes at a faster tempo with the vocals of the chorus sung over. We hadn’t perfected this part, but the instruments start to drop out again as the ukulele comes back in order to play solo over the lyrics. For the final part of the song, the verse is repeated again with just the ukulele, ending the song.

Before performing, we decided that our song was an assortment of major and minor tonality, based around childhood dreams. I think that we met this description through the use of our instruments, particularly by opening with the ukulele to make it sound happier from the start. This gave a contrast to the darker themes in the lyrics and the later use of heavier instrumentation in the piece.

The feedback from our peers was that the opening with the ukulele went well, and that the instruments worked well together. However we could have improved in the transitions between the ukulele playing solo and going into the other instruments as the timing for this part was out for when we performed. I agree, as if given more time we would have fixed the timing and the ending of the song in order to perfect it. Personally, I think we could have developed even further by adding in another verse rather than having only one, as it would have helped to enhance the structure.

My own strength, in my opinion, was the use of my bass to make the song heavier for the punk association by playing the root notes of the chords along with the guitar. But, I think I could have improved by having a section where I could play something faster and therefore more complicated; I think this would have helped the song to be more heavier, further suiting the punk genre we wanted to incorporate.

Overall, I think our performance was a successful response to the stimulus aided by the genre we chose to use to depict it. Yet, there was a lot we could have developed and improved upon in order to make our piece better, such as the structure.
