Leafcutter ants are amazing workers! They use their jaws to cut leaves and carry them to their huge underground homes, which can have over 1,000 rooms. Imagine if a person could carry almost 600 pounds with just their teeth—that’s how strong these ants are!

Their trails can be up to 100 feet long on the ground and up tree trunks. But guess what? They don’t eat the leaves. Instead, they use the leaves to grow a special fungus that their baby ants eat. They break down the leaves by crushing them and mixing them with a special liquid.

Leafcutter ants live in huge groups, with up to eight million ants in one colony! Each ant has a different job to do. Together, they can take away up to 17 percent of the leaves in their area, and sometimes they can even take down entire trees in just one day.

For example, if there are many decaying logs (where salamanders live), it means the forest is old and not too messed up by people.

People often think salamanders are lizards, but they are actually amphibians, which means they breathe through their skin. To stay safe from predators, salamanders have chemicals that taste bad and bright colors to warn others that their skin is poisonous.
