The Portulaca plant died and there was no more seeds from that plant available for the birds with smaller beaks on the island. The Tribulus plant somewhat survived through the drought and still produced a few seeds available for the birds with bigger beaks on the island. When all that was left was hard seeds the birds with the smaller, thinner beaks died because they couldn't eat the hard seeds and didn't have a food source but the birds with the bigger, thicker beaks could eat the harder seeds, had a food source, and survived.
