As the author illustrated how being in the sea resembles a struggle that millions of people are experiencing worldwide, he embedded a plethora of meanings behind each painful line that could relate to some events in the real world. One of these lines is the title of this map, "We carry soil in small bags, may home never fade in our hearts." For me, the soil here connotes their country/nationality which is at risk of being forgotten due to the pain and suffering that they have experienced. It's either a choice to forget the cause of the pain/trauma even though they do not want it in order to help ease their psychological problems, or just aftermath of being away for a long period of time. In my map, I chose to identify 2 types of battles that would cause an individual to leave his homeland: political war and war for his family.

Political War
Just recently, hundreds of missiles bombarded the lands of Jerusalem and Gaza which left countless of innocent lives gone. Besides the meaning above, carrying "soil in small bags" may also pertain to the people of each side of the war, carrying their nation (soil) or their side's belief on their shoulders — being the small bags. This means that it may be too much for them but they still need to fight: for the love of their country that they hope won't fade away because of the too much weight that they are bearing.

Source:
Source: Nidal Al-mughrabi, Rami Ayyub. “Gaza Conflict Intensifies with Rocket Barrages and Air Strikes.” Reuters, Thomson Reuters, 12 May 2021, www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/biden-expects-spiralling-israel-gaza-conflict-end-soon-2021-05-12/.

War for his Family

Besides the usual definition of wars that society acknowledges, there are other battles that lots of people are going through that even without bullets, rockets, or missiles, they still experience a lot of pain and sacrifice. Going to other countries to fight the hunger the poverty may impose into your family is just life fighting in a real war — you have no choice but to stay away from your family and risk everything for them. "May home never fade in our heart" — in this kind of battle, the question of maintaining your faith despite all the struggles is really always present on the table.

Source:
Mapa, Claire Dennis S. “Total Number of OFWs Estimated at 2.2 Million.” Philippine Statistics Authority, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, 4 June 2020, psa.gov.ph/statistics/survey/labor-and-employment/survey-overseas-filipinos.
