Many people saw Mr. Hooper and the woman together.. it suggested that he knew her previously and disregarded his current relationship. A quote mentioned how he suffered from his vows and didn't follow his word. His goal was to hide his face under his secret sin and his veil was to display that he had guilt and shame. No one knew his reason, so people considered his wearing of the veil as a sin.

People thought that the veil was there as a way of sin when Hooper thought he was using itself for privacy and respect. Hooper wore this veil as shame and not wanting to emphasize any of his sin. The veil is explained as something that covered his face. Everyone has secrets, so the veil is used as a way to sort of diminish their severity. Mr. Hooper's congregation thought that Hooper was showing impurity with the veil, so they stayed away from him at first. A quote mentioned that he stood in front of the council and representative. It showed the realization of the congregation and the followers. It showed him as a leader and was an example of how people displayed their sins.

The women believed the minister was having an affair with the woman as there are several hints leading towards. The minister struggles to lift up his own veil which shows he is scared of people knowing that he committed sin by possibly having an affair and trying to hide his own guilt. The minister was showing his own secret sin during the sermon with a few choice statements that sounded like he was close with the girl when he shouldn't have. The minister refuses to lift his veil for fiance when he never had trouble before showing he was trying to hide his sin.

Mr. Hooper would lose the accountability of his actions if he removed the mask. The mask showed his commitment to his sins and punishment and shows the darkness he holds over his sin. It represents the shame he feels within himself. It shows a secret meaning of how everyone has secrets and everyone would have a veil if they showed their sin. It shows a respective man of God showing he is capable of sinning, showing people it can be accepted and you can even go to heaven even if you have sinned. The veil represented the darkness he had with his sinning and showed even as a priest he didn't have to hide it. This allowed other people to see they also didn't have to hide their sins in order to go to heavan.

While the story may relate to sin, the fact of the matter is that a majority of the story centers around the argument of which occurs between the Mr. Hooper and his former fiance. The fact that, even after leaving his fiance, he seems to not care about her and easily moves on. His wife states that beneath the black veil, he would reveal the ugly crimes he committed against his fiance. He is hiding his own sin with he veil, and the veil is representative of that.

Mr. Hooper's greatest sin was his affair with the maiden, and that is why he wears the black veil. He doesn't even admit it to his wife, but is able to show his sins to others through wearing this veil. His goal was to utilize the veil to hide his sin. The color black is often associated with death and sin, and Mr. Hooper wearing the veil is showing that he is hiding his own sins. Mr. Hooper couldn't even look at his fiance without his veil on, because the veil was a symbol of his sin of cheating on her with the mistress. Showing that with the veil on he was hiding this.

People fear their sins and what will come from them. Elizabeth is having guilt of her own sin because she doesn't want to suffer what he goes through. So she tries to figure out how to prevent her guilt.

The minister is describing everyone having sin, which represents his own sin and how everyone has it. It shows how he is also human just like the rest even though he is a pastor.

When people hide their sins it disconnects them from faith. From the guilt of his own sin he has to cover his own face to show that you don't have to be perfect.

Puritans believed in Jesus, which is important because it washes away the past, he believes it shows sin and how ministers can even have sin. The veil shows how we can all have sin and still get to heaven. Sin changes people, and it is clear that there was a death in the story. He is trying to show you are allowed to sin and that even though you do you have to face it and move forward in order to make it to heaven.
