Sherman Alexie wrote the book to inform his readers of his past life. Alexie argues with himself over how he truly feels about his mother. He feels as if he can't forgive her for all the hardships she put him through. He uses repetition of stories from front to cover in his book to show the things he just can't get past.

Alexie uses repetition of stories throughout his chapters to continue to make his points of his inadequate childhood. He talks of how his family was constantly around murders, rapists, and thieves. Each time he tells the stories he changes certain details almost as if he was accidentally contradicting himself.

"We love the salmon because we eat the salmon". Alexie throws this short sentence in the middle of his story to really show his questioning about his mother. He believes he loves her, but he can't forgive her, he loves her because she has the label 'mother'. He later says in a chapter "I never once questioned my father's love for me."
