Exercise 5
1. Prejudice is a feeling that is very bad.
When readers read this sentence, they are more likely to feel confused the meaning of bad because the implication of bad is too board and different people hold different feeling about it, so it had better to narrow down more detailed words such as sadness.
2. Immigrants are people who immigrated.
2. There is a similar form of Immigrants---immigrated. If student find it difficult to understand “immigrated” or even they do not have idea of this word, they will fail in comprehending the whole sentence.
4. Ethnic communities are when German people live together with other Germans.
1. This explanation is totally wrong. According to Wikipedia, Ethnic community refers to a group of people enjoying a lot of similarities including common ancestry language as well as social culture and history.
Exercise 7
1.multinational corporations can be defined a corporate organization that owns or controls production of goods or services in at least one country other than its home country.
2.outsourcing means an agreement in which one company contracts its own internal activity to a different company.
3.More than one culture mixed together where people from different races or nations live together and they share different mindset and religions is known as a hybrid culture.
4.Music that is a type of music in which the words are not sung but are spoken in a rapid, rhythmic way is referred
to as rap.
5.A paediatrician is a doctor who specializes in treating sick children.
6.Elementary school is described as a school for students in their first school years, where they get primary education before they enter secondary education.
7.Biology means the science which is concerned with the study of living things.
8.mature students can be defined as students who are over 18 years old.
9.Discrimination is knwon as the practice of treating one person or group of people less fairly or less well than other people or groups.
10. An unreasonable dislike of a particular group of people or things, or a preference for one group of people or things over another is referred as prejudice.
11.Indigenous peoples, also known as first peoples, aboriginal peoples or native peoples, are ethic group who are the pre-colonial original inhabitants of a given region, in contrast to groups that have settled, occupied or colonized the area more recently.

Exercise 9
Assimilation is defined as a process an immigrant or group of immigrants transform their own cultural habits as well as lifestyles to adapt to host nation’s society. Assimilation can be divided into two types, one is successful assimilation, another is unsuccessful assimilation. If immigrants are successfully able to settle down, they will live with locals, feeling peaceful and embrace the harmonious society. For instance, immigrants from different nations in Malaysia take several years to adapt the society, finally after the effort made by both immigrants and locals, Malaysian culture becomes diversified, consisting of Malay, Indian, Chinese as well as other ethnicities.

However, unsuccessful assimilation is a headache to host society. Some social instability and unrest would occur with political issues and when immigrants receive the emotion of hostility from locals, they would not contribute more to the society. Take Australia as an example, recently people from different countries swarm into Sydney, city infrastructure is not designed for large population, which causes social tension when immigrants scramble for social resources with locals. Therefore, Settling down has to take several years and requires both willingness of immigrant and host citizens and the effort of government but this is not always successful.

Exercise 13
Visible minorities denotes demographic groups that appear distinct from population. People can recognize them easily due to their appearance and social habits. Visible minorities (VM) can be classified as ppl, because they are distinguishable by behaviour, clothing, and physical appearance. When it comes to conducts ,for example, they bow when greetings and speak at a special volume. When they choose clothes, they would wear a particular hat and tend to wear the clothes that cover their faces, because many of them have different skin colour.
Exercise 14
Prejudice is a collection of unwarranted beliefs possessed by members of particular demographic group.

There are four common categories in prejudice including racial, ethnic, religious and national.

Firstly, Judgements made about ppl because of racial ancestry such as Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic can be sorted out as Racial prejudice.

Secondly, ethnic prejudice is bias against ppl from other ethnic group including the Han Chinese, the Tamil Indians.

Thirdly, religious prejudice can be defined as negative opinions on followers of certain religions like Christianity Judaism.

Last but not least, people who are unfairly judged due to their birth places or countries can be regarded as national prejudice.

Contact email: kenchanck@163.com

Exercise 5

1. First, there is no details to explain what is prejudice. Although this sentence is concise, it is not concrete. As ‘bad’ is an abstract word, people can not understand the differences between prejudice and other negative feelings.

2. If the reader does not understand the term ‘immigrants’, it is unlikely that she or he will understand the verb ‘to immigrate’. By the same token, if the reader does already understand the verb ‘immigrate’, then the definition is actually unnecessary and a waste of words..

3. The writer provides an example instead of an explanation.

4. This sentence doesn’t provide a classification of the term that they are defining. A huge number of thing can affect the human respiratory system and asthma is only one of these factors.

Exercise 7

1. Multinational corporations mainly refer to monopoly enterprises in developed capitalist countries which are engaged in international production and operation activities by setting up branches or subsidiaries in various parts of the world.

2. Outsourcing is an agreement in which one company contracts its own internal activity to a different company.

3. A hybrid culture is a culture which has combined more than one traditional culture.

4. Rap is a type of popular music with a strong rhythm in which the words are spoken.

5. paediatrician

6. An elementary school is an institution where children between the ages of four and twelve are educated.

7. Biology is a field of science which focuses on the study of living organisms.

8. Mature students are the students at a college or university who are older than the usual age.

9. Discrimination means the practice of treating a person or particular group of people differently because of their skin colour, sex and so on.

10. Prejudice is an unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially when formed without enough thought or knowledge.

11. Indigenous people are people who have always been in the place where they are, rather than being brought there from somewhere else.

Exercise 9

Assimilation is a process during which immigrant or group of immigrants alter own cultural habits as well as lifestyles to adapt to host nation’s society. Assimilation can be divided into two types, one is successful assimilation, another is unsuccessful assimilation. Successful assimilation happens when immigrants can live together with local people peacefully and harmoniously. Therefore, the unique characteristics of this concept cannot be identified.

Exercise 7

1. multinational corporations

Multinational corporations are large and powerful business companies that operate in several different countries.

2. outsourcing

Outsourcing means the behavior through which a company arranges for somebody outside to do work or provide goods for that company.

3. a hybrid culture

A hybrid culture describes some kind of way of life or a group of literature and art that is the product of mixing two or more different nationalities.

4. rap

Rap is defined as a type of popular music that uses a fast and strong rhythm and words spoken fast, not sung.

5. paediatrician

A doctor who studies and treats the diseases of children is known as a paediatrician.

6. an elementary school

An elementary school is a place where children go to receive first stages of education.

7. biology

A subject that scientifically studies the life and the structure of plants and animals is defined as biology.

8. mature students

Mature students mean adult students who go to college or university some years after leaving school.

9. discrimination

Discrimination describes the practice that treats somebody or a particular group in society less fairly than others.

10. prejudice

Prejudice is an unreasonable dislike or preference that points at a person, group, custom, etc., especially when it is based on their race, religion, sex, etc.

11. indigenous people

Indigenous people are citizens who belong to a particular place rather than coming to it from somewhere else.

Exercise 9

Assimilation is a process during which immigrant or group of immigrants alter their cultural habits and lifestyles to adapt to society of host nation. It is important because unsuccessful assimilation can give rise to less contribution of immigrants to society and even social instability as well as political issues, while successful one can help construct a peaceful and harmonious society where immigrants can live together with indigenous people. However, assimilation is not always successfully achieved since this takes a long time; furthermore, willingness of both immigrant and local citizens and effort by host government are required. Countries have experienced times of both success and failure. For example, Malaysia has slowly managed to let ethnicities (Malay, Indian, Chinese) become members of Malaysian. By contrast, with a large number of immigrants, there have been tensions between immigrants and locals for times in Australia.

Exercise 13

Visible minorities are defined as demographic groups that appear distinct from people around them due to their appearance and social habits. VM can be classified as people who are distinguishable by behavior, clothing and physical appearance. There are some examples that explain the categories of VM. First, people in these groups can be recognized by behavior like bowing during greetings and speaking at a particular volume. Second, their clothing can also be symbols for their identity of VM since they wear a particular type of hat or cover their faces. In addition, features such as particular color of skin can be another example that distinguish them from other people.

Exercise 14

Prejudice is known as collection unwarranted beliefs which are held about members of particular demographic group. It can be divided into four common types: racial, ethnic, religious and national. First, racial prejudice describes judgements made about people due to racial ancestry like Caucasian, Asian and Hispanic. Second, Ethnic prejudice means bias against people from minority ethnic group, for example, the Han Chinese, the Tamil Indians. Third, religious prejudice refers to negative opinions about followers of minority religion such as Christianity Judaism. The last one is national prejudice that points to people unfairly judged due to their birth in smaller part of country.
Email: 2927665501@qq.com
